Default Hardtop Convetable?

2 Questions on this one....

1. Other than weight why hasn't corvette joined the rest of the modern cars with a hardtop convertable option?

2. Since reality is that this will not be an option anytime soon (since we barely got a power top option this year for the first time), are there any aftermarket hardtop options out there?

I only ask because I just love the lines of the convertable (much better than the targa) but the only concern is the rag top and the fact it looks kinda cheesy with the top up (IMHO) and it is an easy way to steal things from it with only a canvas cover to protect it and it's contents.

I think weight IS the main issue that keeps this option off the car. That and a power hardtop as a low volume option would probably compromises design and price issues. In other words, GM may think that due to price or weight, some ‘vert buyers would be put off and you can’t just put the option on “some” of the verts. Maybe they think that’s OK as the XLR is around to pickup those buyers.

IMO, I don’t really think you see power hardtops on many sports cars at least not those that sell the image of pure sports car. You see it as the standard on those cars that lean more to the sport touring-car field like the Lexus, Mec. and XLR. Just my opinion though….

I’m pretty sure after-market hardtops can be had, have you searched the web?

I don't think it's a joining the rest of the world thing. Some people, like me, like the look of the soft top and don't want a hardtop. I actually think the Vette would look pretty silly with a hard top.

To answer your 2nd question, yes. Caravaggio offers a hard-top for verts - and you can even have that taken even further and have a targa made out of that. Then you've got the lines of the vert / FRC, the convenience of the targa for the open air experience, or take the whole thing off for the ultimate wind-in-your-hair driving. If I had the budget, I'd definitely buy a vert and then call them up.

I don't see why they wouldn't be working on a model for the C6 vert.

I can understand not wanting the hardtop, I don't even like fooling with the hardtop for my Stingray.....but how would the convertible look "silly" with a hardtop You have virtually the same profile with a soft or hard top. FRCs are convertibles that were given the hardtop at the factory.

You haven't seen much apparently so here's a few pics....I don't think it looks "silly" at all...to the contrary

One of my favorites...wallstAl's car
