In a lot of cars, the structural reinforcements that convertibles get justifies some of the cost. In the C5 and C6, there is none. The only difference is the roof. And the coupes already have the top chopped for the targa.
Yet another benefit of a very stiff frame for GM's bottom line.
It's GM's "We know you're gonna pay extra for it" price gouge. Check out the pricing in the Black Book. The Convertible was around $300 CHEAPER than the Coupe from 63 to 75. Then, when the roadster was brought back in 86, the price has been thousands more than the coupe ever since.
I agree - $8K for the convert is gouging. The real differance, however, is "only" $6,595. This is because the convert comes with the 1SA package. See below:
Option Packages:
1SA Corvette Coupe Equipment Group $1,405.00
Corvette Convertible Equipment Group $0.00
1SB Corvette Coupe Preferred Equipment $4,360.00
Corvette Convertible Preferred Equipment $2,995.00
1SX Corvette Coupe Base Equipment Group $0.00
Nevertheless, GM is still way overcharging for the convert. Hopefully, down the road when you sell the convert, you'll recoup some of the differance.
I think for 2004 the 1SB package was the same price for coupe or convertible and now its almost $1,400 less for convertible which makes up some of the difference. I could be wrong

You're right. The Coupe comes standard with 1SX and the Roadster comes standard with 1SA. When the Coupe is equipped with 1SA, the difference between the two is $6500.
REALLY? You mean GM is not a charitable organization?
ok.........................ok...but ,realize this...as much as a lot of people think GM is gouging and how terrible they are...if there was no GM all these years...there would probably be no Corvette, the way we know it...just a thought.....
The other option that you don't need on a Roadster is the transparent roof. If you want to see above you, just drop the top! This tranparent roof costs $1400 smackers, so deducting this and the 1SA package brings the difference down to around $5K.
