I guess you would need to slam on the emergency brake put it in reverse and hit the button. Wow.

You'll want to pull over as quickly as possible, and that may require having your engine running to punch through holes.

But no matter what, it's illegal to turn off your engine while moving.

You have to put your's in park before it shuts off. Just think having to put it park at 70 mph.

Not to say that it couldn't happen tomorrow, but I've not ever yet had a situation in 47 years where I had to shut an engine off at 70 MPH. :ack

let's say on a long trip i pick up a beautiful hitch-hiker. against everyone heres better judgement, i let her drive. she drives awful, so i tell her to stop and let me drive. I WILL SHUT IT OFF BEFORE I EXIT(after mods) Otherwise i have to get her to put it in R. And since she shifts awful.....
Stock i risk her driving off without me if i leave it on.
.......
OR, if she refuses to stop, how do i stop her? easiest way is to hit off, and i will re-wire it to take MY command.
:p:

Anybody know what happens if I want to put it in reverse, turn the engine off, then take it out of reverse? I frequently do this not when cleaning my car so I can push the car in neutral in order to clean the tires.

I recall turning off my car going about 15 so I could roll the rest of the way down the driveway, that way my parents didn't know I got home at 3 AM, ROFL!

I wasn't fooling anyone 'sept myself...They knew :p

Once it's in neutral, most folks I know would have their foot on the brake and be driving it to a spot where they can pull over out of the traffic. Once the car comes to a stop out of the traffic, I don't have to sit in it waiting for it to go boom.

Don't laugh that happened to me. The steering locked even though I didn't shut if off. Weeeeeeeeeee I broke the lock, and got the car under control. I drove it to the dealer (who screwed it up in the first place) and it was making ratcheting noised when you turned the wheel.

As far as the reverse thing, I would think that people would put it into first, press the button to shut it off, not realize that it did not shut off and then dump the clutch. Bang right into what ever is in front of them. Who was the rocket scientist that thought that one up?

Agree with TedG ... we've spent the whole thread explaining why it is ok but haven't talked at all about why they even did it?

I dont know if this has been discussed before, but shouldnt the Start Button on the Auto C6 work like the XLR?

they will fix it on the new improved C7.
'
Once i did throw a car into N with the pedal stuck floored and it hit 8500 rpm. got towed home. only had 1 bent pushrod :p:
i did shut the key off first but it had no effect w/carb and turbo w/22 psi boost. i was at the end of a track, and THAT was a real emergency.
My c6 will have a kill switch which will double as an anti-theft switch in case my fob is stolen.

GM's options:

1. Allow the button to turn off the engine at any time.
2. Allow the button to turn off the engine only at a stop.
3. Allow the button to turn off the engine only while in 1st.
4. Allow the button to turn off the engine only while in Reverse.
5. Allow the button to turn off the engine only while in 1st or Reverse.

Let's look at all of these.

1. Accidentally hitting the button results in a very bad situation at freeway speeds. Also illegal to do so.
2. Why? Not as safe as 3, 4, and 5.
3. Makes sense as this is the safe way to park a manual, and forcing the issue may result in lower insurance rates, or may comply with future regulations.
4. Same as #3, but makes even more sense because reverse is a shorter gear and, thus, more resistant to movement. For both 3 and 4, lurching forward is only an issue if you're a bad enough driver to let the clutch out while the engine is running and the car in gear. This is the driver's fault, as the C6 requires you to push the clutch in to start the engine. If you don't want to risk hitting the car behind you, shift into neutral--just like everyone else.
5. Same as 3 and 4, but not as safe if people choose 1st and still has the same drawbacks.

So the answer as to why? Safety.

Not necessarily. Other than some suspension bits and the frame, the XLR and C6 don't share much.

But I'll have an answer for you soon enough.

Seems to me that one of my early Z28's (maybe 73?) had this reverse shut off thing with the stock shifter. Just another place for aftermarket to jump in with a by-pass that costs about 80.00. CAGS, CLB....

To shut off the engine while moving couldn't you just depress the clutch, shift car into reverse, leave clutch depressed, push button to shut off engine, brake to stop?
