What's the story with this? Why reverse? Is it a PITA? Can it be bypassed?
Reverse is part of the column lock system now, preventing column lock at highway speeds as has happened with the C5. Because reverse is the best ratio for parking. No. Probably.
YES it can easily be bypassed. The very first thing I did when I got my C6 home from the dealer on 9/28/04 was unplug the connecter from the trans and insert a 2.2k ohm resistor into the plug to disable CAGS. I drove a C6 for a day back in June and hated the CAGS so much that I Bought the resistor from Radio Shack the next day! The package of 5 resistors that cost 99 cents has been sitting on my workbench just waiting for the day I took delivery of my own C6. By the way, a 1/4 watt resistor can be substituted for the 1/2 watt rated part but you should bend each of the leads like a hairpin to increase the holding tension on the sockets terminals.
You can purchase an eliminator from Ecklers and several other sources for about $20 plus shipping if you want a weathertight plug on the resistor for all-weather driving. If I can find the part number for the plug, I will be posting it on the forum.

And how does placing the MN6 transmission in reverse when the car is parked and the motor is not running prevent column lock at highway speeds?
I think we can all mark our calendars. Every 60 days there will be a post concerning this issue. Scissors will take his stand, I'll take mine - and we'll get a few newcomers to chime in. Look at the bright side - this will only go on for 6 more years
I read the reason was to prevent someone from accidently shutting off the engine while driving. Allegedly, you cannot shut off the engine unless the shifter is in reverse. Yes/No?
