Im not a tech guru like most people here but what is the function of this and why would one need it? sorry for the ignorance.

It eliminates the 'skip shift', where the 6spd is forced to go from 1st, directly to 4th, at certain temperature, throttle settings and speeds. It is there to increase gas mileage, but can be a nuisance.
