I was driving along the freeway at about 80mph when i decided to see what would happen if i threw the car into "park"....a really loud boom came from underneath the car and then a bunch of sparks came out the back.....is this something i should be concerned with?

That could be a problem.
I actually did this once to a Chrysler Torqueflite in a Challenger. Just got a little "tick tick tick" noise as the spring loaded park pawl protected the transmission from harm. A Chevy transmission doesn't have that spring, but it does have a lockout which should prevent you from shoving it into park at speed.
This thread, along with your post in the thread about the oil leak, makes me wonder about why you post what you do, sometimes. Please don't clutter up the C6 section with such as this.

Clearly this proves that GM didn't consider the IQ of the average C6 buyer when designing the car. They should have known that people would do things like park at 80 MPH, forget key fobs, and ignore warning chimes and honks.

WOW.....another C6 defect, here comes another recall.
I do this all the time in my C5 and have NEVER had this problem. Think I will keep my C5 till they get all the bugs worked out of the C6.
Scissors - you could have done better.
In reality with the C6Auto, once you get above 40 mph, “P” stands for performance mode. The sparks you observed were probably the instantaneous reaction of the hypergolic fuel mixture in the after burner. You have probably used up you allocation. Suggest pulling into a gas station at your local Air Force Base to replenish what you expended.
