IMO tastier rumors for 08 concern the 'base' engines move up to perhaps as high as 450. The least will probably be a bump to 425 or 435 thus closing the gap somewhat with the present Z06.
IF, I say IF, the base car moves up to 450 and the present Z06 went away the gap between base would be even greater than at present assuming 600 0r 650 hp. I don't think that makes marketing sense though since the SS ( or whatever ) will be super expensive and produced in perhaps 1/4th or 1/5th the numbers of the present Z06.
I think it more likely that the base C6 will go up to something greater than today be it 425 or 450; the Z06 will go up a bit say to 525 and then the super vette stands tall over all challengers at 600 or 650.
With this approach the base car gains some hp and appeal, the Z06 moves up and maintains its' distance from the base car , and there is no HUGE gap between base and the only other available car.
GM could thus continue to milk the base C6 cash cow, continue to milk the Z06 cash cow, and bring an entirely new cow into the barn with the super vette. In other words they would be increasing their absolute market share by providing a broader range of model options in the Corvette lineup.
And in the process destroy the competition especially if the new 6060 6 speed gets into the 08 model year. Me, I am waiting to replace my 05 until 08 hoping for some of these changes.
just my opinions. I guess I'd enjoy working in GM marketing......

100K (if true) not including dealer mark ups ...IMO that loses the sweet spot the current Z occupies.
100K I'm looking at @ a slightly used Ford GT, an original 426 hemi anything etc...etc.. ( that's just me)
The 08 Viper is supposed to have 600-625hp ...probably sticker mid 80's & you can get it in a rag top.
XLR-V tried for 100K sticker & they were on ebay for 85-89K instantly .
Don't see 3 vette engines plus 2 caddie engines . If anything GM would
undoubtedly love the XLR-V & Z07(?) to share the same power plant.
Economies of scale saves them on cost .
Not to say GM couldn't move a few thousand but then again after the initial frenzy where the Ford GT was selling for around 200K , dealers & the market came back to earth to the point a dealer offered me one @ 10K under sticker & regardless of the extra Z's HP the GT is a beautiful car with only a 2 year run & a few thousand total ever. It's downright exotic compared to any other american sports car.
My 2 cents

I just dont like the idea of a supercharged engine in the supposed "blue devil". I think they should keep the N/A engine bump the horsepower up to 650 and futher lighten the chassy. Also, upgraded materials in the interior. This would be the ultimate vette, but at 100k+++ out of the reach for most people.
Also, hopefully marketing at GM makes available some of the parts that will make up the blue devil us c6 owners.

I would MUCH prefer a 3 valve push rod or SOC set up with higher volumetric efficiency and maintain the 427 CID engine size, if possible with displacement on demand to avoid a gas guzzler tax or the have the most economical super car out there. IMHO

I wouldn't spend 100k+ on a blown 6.2 ltr. that will get spanked by many lower cost C5/C6 FI cars. For turnkey and people who don't mod (or really drive their cars), it will be nice. For GM to deliver the SS, they will need to spend $$ upgrading brakes, suspension and drive train. This would not be a Z06 w. a FI engine, and would not share many mechanical parts. An unlikely departure for GM's bean counters.

So, the '08 Viper will again rise to the top in performance next year.

Also, where did you hear about an engine size of 8.4 liters? That's the first time I hear that.
Most of the posts I have found on the subject are talking about a car that will go into production in 2008 not jan 2007. If that was the case don't you think we would have seen one by now? Don't get me wrong, I would love to see one at the 2007 Jan LA Autoshow!

Tonight I got some information from somebody who has actually put a hand on the engine. I will save the exact information for you guys to be surprised when you find out.
However, I'll say this:
From what I've been told, they're aiming for 0-60 in less than 2.5 seconds. And they've beat it, by a bit.
They're aiming for over 200 MPH. And they've done it.
Something special happens around 140 MPH
Something else special happens around 190 MPH
It'll cost around a hundred grand in US dollars
They want to beat the best in the world for less than a quarter of a cost. And, from how it sounds, they will.

I say, convert all gas stations throughout the US to Regular E0, E85 100 Octane, and Premium E0 (93 Octane)
The middle grade is a joke, and the tanks could be used for E85.
One more step away from Iranian, and Hugo Oil (Citgo).
