Without straying too far off topic, I want to thank all of you for your prayers and kind thoughts for our dog. She is hanging in there, and we are still awaiting test results with a definitive diagnosis so that we have a direction on how to treat her.

Part 21

My wife and I are thinking about a long road trip, we could sure use one about now. I don’t know where we would go or exactly when, but I do know one thing for sure, I will take the Z06 and leave the 997TT in the garage.

Comfort is not just about how you feel sitting in the driver’s seat of a car. There is a certain ambience or environmental euphoria I feel in the Corvette that I just cannot seem to find when I am behind the wheel of the 997TT.

I define comfort by including the way everything flows around me while I am seated and driving the car. While the actual comfort and feel of the seat is a prerequisite; given that, the ease of reach of the instruments and visibility of the gauges become equally important. Once you are moving, as you look around, the things inside the car need to be soothing to the eyes. Without deference to the quality of materials used or the actual workmanship on either interior, the Z06 is easier on the eyes and everything is well within reach and easy to use. The colors and level of gloss used on the interior components of the Z06 are subtle and provide a relaxing feeling. Nothing inside is flashy or offensive. I like the closeness of being wrapped in the interior of the Z06. The use of gentle curves on certain features used on the dash and door panels make it a friendlier and more welcoming place to be, especially if you are going to be on the road for hours.

(The interior photo below was obtained from a thread on the Corvette Forum, credit Ticketbait)

The 997TT interior is truly a work of art, but it feels hard and looks austere. I think the Porsche engineers did a wonderful job with the 997TT interior. They were challenged with the daunting task of having to enhance and enrich a tired and dated look. The 997TT interior is no doubt an example of fine craftsmanship. The problem is that it does not provide comfort while driving. The interior fails miserably at blending the essential elements to provide that surrounding feeling of warmth and security. Old habits die hard with this German car manufacturer.

(The interior photo below was obtained from a thread on the Rennlist Forum, credit Atomic80)

The foundation of the 997TT interior is basically the same as every 911 car since the beginning of time. Imagine that the dash and center vertical section form a “T” shape. Then the center piece extends out at almost a 90 degree angle to form the center console. Porsche’s idea of interior innovation and evolution is to schmaltz it up with expensive trim and newer gadgetry. Spending a lot of money on full leather, special stitching, carbon fibers, special woods and other high quality materials does not guarantee comfort. The center section boasts more buttons to push and an excellent navigation module called the Porsche Communication Management. While all of these buttons are neat to play with, the position and small size of these buttons make it tough to know if you have pressed the correct button the first time.

The car can be had with optional Adaptive Sport Seats. My 997TT has the optional Adaptive Sport Seat option and as good as everyone thinks they are, they still feel rock hard to me. I am not sure what the “adaptive” part of these seats really means, other than they have lots of buttons and ***** for making adjustments. While the 997TT interior looks outstanding and admirable when peering through the window, I have a hollow feeling while I am engaged on the road. Designing comfort into this interior was not high on Porsche's list of priorities.

I am convinced that we will enjoy the comfort and ride in the Z06 when we finally make that road trip. There is comfort in convenience. There still has to be a place to put all your stuff and be able to access to it on the road and when you stop.

To be continued …

I have read these installments with interest, having owned and tracked a C5 ZO6 and a c6 Z51. After being on the fence a while between a C6 ZO6 and a Porsche 997S, I recently bought the Porsche, but not before enjoying a couple of ZO6 test drives. I agree with the preference for the Vette for a long trip. Most everything about the Porsche is designed for driving ethusiastically and, for many folks, that's not consistent with long-term comfort. And it certainly lacks storage space. Obviously, I have a current preference for the 997S, but the new ZO6 is a great car. Guess I can dream of owning both!

Another great chapter. I agree with your take on the C6Z06 interior. I find it very comfortable and appealing. I think a lot of the fault finding with the Z06 interior we've seen is just sour grapes...

Part 22

It’s no secret to sports car enthusiasts that the Porsche offers little space for your belongings. Starting with the front trunk, taking any kind of a long road trip is challenging because it offers so little cubic footage.

The lengthy front hood is deceiving on the 997TT. When you open it you are immediately disappointed to discover that more than half of it is shrouded off, rendering it useless for storing anything significant. What you are left with is basically a deep and dark hole which will stow no more than a couple of small carry-on type bags. Try explaining that to your better half. Porsche road travelers argue that you can fold down the rear jump seats for additional storage. The rear jumps seats are useless anyway, except maybe for seating no more than a toddler. When you fold down the seats it creates a flat storage area. The problem is that the space that you are left with is very small. This is because the distance from the flat area to the sloping roof is short and the cubic area suffers. This so-called bonus space is nothing more than a booby prize.

At least Chevrolet did not try to fool their owners by including rear seats. The available storage space is superior to the 997TT. Lifting the rear hatch is all you need to do to access the space. While not exactly cavernous, at least you can get some stuff in there and that makes a spouse happy. We bought the Southern Car Parts divider and tray accessory the week before the car arrived and so far we have been pretty happy with it. For a road trip, I might pull the tray and leave the divider in place so things don’t slide forward.

When it comes to stopping performance, for the kind of driving I do, the braking systems on the 997TT and the Z06 are fairly close. The Z06 is using 14-inch (355-mm) cross-drilled rotors with six-piston calipers on the front and 13.4-inch (340-mm) cross-drilled rotors with four-piston calipers on the rears. The 997TT is almost identical, with the Z06 having just slightly larger front rotors. On the Porsche, you can order from the factory the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) option for only $9,000 more. I think for most of us, the standard brakes in either car are more than satisfactory. With the Z06, you will need to go aftermarket for a similar upgrade. Guys who track their Porsches swear by them. Porsche distinguishes their PCCB from standard by painting the calipers yellow, while the standard brakes sport the red painted calipers.

This paint color distinction on the Porsche opens the door for one-upmanship. One sleepy and cool Sunday morning my wife and I decided to take a short breakfast run with the Turbo. We had the car only a few weeks at the time. We needed some gas so we pulled into the Chevron station a few miles from our home. As I am standing there, a guy in an SL55 pulls up to the gas pump in front of us. He gets out of his car, and slowly starts to approach me. I’d say he was a 45 year old, slightly balding and about 40 lbs. overweight. Draped in a dark blue matching Adidas sweat suit, he walks by and curiously stares at my wheels, but doesn’t comment. As he walks away, he turns around and while looking at me he states, “I see you didn’t get the yellow brakes”. What do you say? Rather surprised, I simply responded by saying, “Right, we went with just the standard brakes.” And that was it and he got back in his car and drove away. I just shook my head and drove away. While the ceramic brakes do provide excellent performance, they have taken on somewhat of a bling component amongst Porsche owners. How unfortunate.

As we move along into our Winter/Spring transition here in Southern California, next week I plan to spend the majority of Saturday doing a complete exterior detail on the Z06. The main focus will be to remove any remaining swirl marks. So I will report back with all of the products I used to achieve the goal and a complete description on the process.

To be continued …

I want to thank all of you for your concern and prayers for our dog in the past month. It has been a difficult time for us. The results of the tests were not good for her and she was diagnosed with bone cancer. We’re keeping her comfortable for now with some pain killers and providing her with lots of love and great Bar-B-Que. We can only take it one day at a time. God Bless all of you for your kind thoughts and prayers.

Mastiff - When the end was near for our black lab, he got all the best food we always denied him - meat scraps, gravy on his dog food, chocolate, the works. Might as well leave this world smilin'!! Great writing on the car and so sorry about your dog.

Thanks Bruce and everyone else. She's eating pretty good right now. Went to Morton's Steak House Saturday night with my wife and daughter. Between the three of us, I think the dog ended up with at least 16 ozs. of New York Strip steak - charred medium, of course. We also got her a bunch of b-b-q beef ribs, sardines, salmon and fresh vegetables. Mastiff's can eat and her appetite is strong for now. Thanks again.
