Default VIN Engine Code "Y" vs. "E"

Can anyone explain the difference between a Z06 with engine code "Y" vs. engine code "E" in the 8th position on the VIN #? Was the one with "Y" a GM test car or something like that? Thanks.

Here's the link for the car I am talking about. I'm thinking maybe it was a GM advertising vehicle, or something like that.

You're pretty close. "Y" was the engine code for the first 161 sequenced C6Z's. These were not originally sold to the public. As the listing says, it was a "pilot" [test] car.

So, there's nothing wrong with owning one of those early Z06's? Seems like it could end up being a good deal.

Well . . . I saw one of them being driven around the race track by a magazine guy back in September, 05 and he was not being gentle. It's hard to say where they've been. Of course, if you could get a really really cheap price on it then maybe the risk is worth while.

I would not touch something like that It all depends where she's been and how she was driven, and there is no way you can get the complete details. Good luck

But if it's warrantied for another 31,000 miles, I'm gonna abuse that car way more than anyone else has, I can promise that. Also, I've never been one to shy away from a car thats been used as it's intended, as long as it in good mechanical/visual shape and it's been maintained. I'd be willing to bet that the car has actually been well taken care of, aside from hard driving.

Like my mother used to say about some of the girls I used to date, "Don't touch that. You don't know where it's been". Seriously, if the deal's right, buy it.

How can you be sure of the mechanical conditions of the various drivetrain parts ? Don't tell me by visual inspection. Your wallet ... good luck

given that it's used with 'moderate' mileage and is 'demo'...
I think that car is worth 50k max.

No, actually GM's wallet for the next 31,000 miles. That's the entire point of a warranty. And furthermore, I think after an inspection and a spirited test drive it's pretty easy to tell whether the car is going to have problems or not.

Kenny Wallace is a former sponser, racer of the Corvette Challenge Corvettes. Upstanding guy. Lot of pull at GM. Corvette is a big part of his business. I'd feel very safe buying from Valley Chevrolet ! my .02. Save the Wave.>George

^ Dang, where did you get all that? Also, what kind of retard would bid that car up to $60k+ (It's at $60,100)? Furthermore, the seller feels that isn't enough because the reserve isn't met. lol.

Looks like it might have been run hard on the track as allanlaw mentioned (brake pads and rotors shot at 5300 miles, rotor got so hot that it fried the boot on the tie rod end). Wonder how the boot on the left tie rod looks?

Thats a subject that I've never been able to get all the answers on. A while ago I saw a GM service bulletin that said its the same engine, just the code was changed. At the Bash in April of 05 I copied down the VIN # of half a dozen or so Z06's; naturally they were all Y codes. A very reliable source told me that the workers at the PBC in Wixom had to put in a lot of overtime in June 05, changing pistons in LS7's they had already built. This would coincide with the last minute delay in startup of customer order production (the first orders, first scheduled with June build dates, were delayed into July). If indeed there was a piston design change, obviously all the regular production cars got the later design and all had an E code. But by June there were over 100 "captured fleet" Z06's running all over the country with Y codes. If indeed there was a piston design change, I seriously doubt they would have pulled engines from built cars to change pistons. And some sources say the LS7 was originally to have forged pistons. Could this have been the change, or just a change in the cast piston design? (The GM parts book doesn't show different pistons for Y or E, but that doesn't mean much).
Has anybody else heard anything on this subject?

( the source stated that all LS7's built prior to 6/15/05 were torn down due to major changes to the pistons, but I'm unable to find out if that includes the engines that were already in cars; I doubt it, which makes me wonder if those are the Y code cars).

i have an early production fleet car. recently purchased from my local chevy dealer via GM Canada.
i know it has a replacement engine. tell me where to look for the number and i will advise what it is.

as far as buying a press car i had no qualms; GM Canada went over the car with a fine tooth comb; updated all sorts of things including the lower front valance that had a few scratches on it. so it has the new design. the car had 16000 km on it when we took over; it now has 28000 and zero problems.
