why so many used Z06s?
first, already searched so don't flame me.
as awesome as the new Z is, i seem to see quite a few on dealer lots that already have 2k-5k miles on them. what's going on? and why are people buying them and then trading them? is it just too much power for the average owner? is there some kind of problem?
i'm a long way from actually being able to own one but it sure is nice to see them out there.

1. 7000 to 8000 built per year for 2.5 years: 2006 2007
2. Minor Improvements for 2008
3. Good resale value.
4. It's getting cold outside...
It's a good time to buy; new or used

Folks with the kind of scratch it takes to get one tend to be very fickle. They go thru cars every couple years irrespective of what they are. The other side, the die hard fan, tends to always upgrade.
The other factor is crowd that likes the latest and greatest.
Its the demographic for the car. We arent talking a practical choice vehicle whose buyers tend to keep it for 10 years or so. If you look at most any new top line sports car, then tend to be resold quite a bit, so not vette specific in this segment.

I had an '05 C6 and now have an '08 Z06. YES, the car has an incredible amount of HP, but it's the driver who dictates how fast the car goes.
Honestly, I can't see how owners with mods handle it as hooking up with the stock 505 is tough as it is. God this thing is fast, but I'm NOT trading mine.

In my case, I got tired of people telling what a good car it was for the money instead of a what a good car it was. The punch line for every conversation was that it was good deal. I really didn't consider $70,000 cheap. The car was crazy fast, the dealer service was better than my Porsche experience and I really liked that they kept the weight off of the car. For me, the intangibles didn't work out so I sold it. I wish GM would do some repositioning on the car, I think it deserves it.

There has been a lot of people on this forum that have sold their 1st C6Z and just bought a new one. Some just can't stand to have a car with more than 5-10K miles. Some just get bored easily. I can't rationalize the additional expense for not much change, so I'll stick with my '06.

Too Many Wives Making Guys Sell Them That Is Why!!!!!
Too much attention and men giving in to the wives is my feeling. The Z06 just gets a lot of thumbs up and attention. Yes some cannot handle the power or just get bored. I do not think there are too many Z06's put there at all. Most of the ones listed on Ebay are either new or low mileage driven by the dealer or very high mileage and the seller is trying to get back their money because they sell very high currently. I bought mine for 65K out the door (1,300 miles) fully loaded and still feel good about it knowing I can make a couple thousand selling now. These cars are badass and will be for a few more years.

My take...
I agree with a lot of what was said here, but if you are waiting till the used ones get more affordable, I think that a Z06 horsepower bump will be what does it. A lot of people who bought the 505 horse car will trade to get a higher horsepower car. A lot (but not all) of Z06 owners have a lot of money and don't worry about the financial hit such a trade involves. The new Super-Vette will have that effect to a certain extent, but it will also be super-expensive. So when there are even more cars out there, the prices will come down- they are still pretty high for 06's, but it is also still the king muscle Corvette- for now.
The 385 horse C5 Z06 got outdone by the 405 horse car, and they became affordable. You can look at the prices for used Dodge Vipers and get an idea of what might happen.

Lots of people used home equity purchase high end toys. Now that mortgages are resetting and home values are dropping, these people are waking up to just what they did and are unloading their toys. RV's, boats, motorcycles, etc are all in the same boat so to speak.
It's not going to be pretty for next couple years.
