Default Metal pieces in oil

I just completed an oil change on 2007 Z 06 with 4300 miles on it (2nd oil change). I found 2 pieces of metal attached to the engine drain plug, none on sump plug. They are not needle bearings, they are almost square and half the size of a match head. My question is does anyone know what is the size of the screen on the oil pump pick up? I plan to cut open the oil filter, would like to know what size particle can get to it? Or has anyone seen any type metal this size attached to their plugs, besides the needle bearing problem?

Post a pic if you can of the debris. I take it you have magnetic plugs. Please be careful when cutting the filter open as debris from the cutting can be confused with the actual contents. I am interested in your findings.

If you have any oil from the previous change, send it to Blackstone Labs for analysis. They have averages for various metal wear components for the LS7 engine. (i.e., increased copper, look for abnormal bearing wear) I found increased copper when the rocker arm bearing failed.
Keep us posted,
Stacey

At about 7k miles, I found a small chunk of metal on the sump magnet. After an oil and filter change, I checked again after 1,000 miles of driving and found three or four more chunks on the same magnet. I reinstalled without cleaning and hauled the car to the local dealer. I was told it was nothing to worry about, that it was just flashing. They changed the oil and filter and told me to drive the car for 2,000 miles and bring it back. I checked the magnet again after another 1,000 miles and found 2 more chunks on the magnet. I returned to the dealership and demanded they open the filter and do an oil analysis. The filter was clean and the analysis was normal. The service manager told me not to worry about it, they have seen this before, and they couldn't do anything anyhow until something broke. Two hundred miles later, pieces of the rotating mass exited through the right side of the block. (As a note, it was not during a drive to the grocery store). I then took the oily mess back to the dealer. Their reply was, "Hmmm, we've never seen this before." The car was basically stock, no tunes, no headers and no internal engine work. It took GM 2 1/2 weeks to decide to warranty it. I am told the parts are at the dealership, but it's been over a month and the car is still sitting outside where I dropped it off. If I had it to do over again, I would communicate with the person whose name is on the engine at the first sign of metal. I'm sure he wouldn't want his name on an engine with pieces stuck through the side! Maybe I wouldn't have had to wait until it broke. I suggest you not let your dealer tell you this is normal. Good luck!

Looks like pieces of a lash cap and related debris from a rocker arm that has let go.
