Viper on Death Row?
Found this thread over at Viper Alley:

I hate to see the Viper go.
Dealer just called. Latest news hot off the factory press...Viper production was supposed to resume in April, however due to the recent unknown future of Chrysler, etc., etc., Viper plant and production has been shut down for at least the next 2 months, with no assurances that it will resume again. I cancelled my 09 roadster red/white order and getting back my $5k deposit, although looking around for a nearby dealer who might have an acceptable new one. If not, I'll do a downgrade and pick up the readily available Z06 and modify it, inside and out....probably at Calloway, where I did the original 1994 Impala S/S upgrade to 500hp with all the goodies. Miss my 2004 360 Modena (belongs in an art museum), but after 5 years...time for some USA muscle!

According to court papers filed in New York, the Viper plant is going to be "left behind", and NOT transfered to "The New Chrysler". That means it will be left behind in bankrupcy court available to be sold to satisfy debts of the "Old" Chrysler. If Saleen can buy it cheap in bankrupcy court, that would be a good fate. I would hate for the Viper to end its run this way. No fanfare, no recognition, no "Final Edition".....Just bankrupcy and shut down. Very sad.

And I'd hardly consider a Z06 a downgrade, but I guess I'm biased.
But, yes, Viper's days were numbered. The division was already up for sale before the bankruptcy.

too bad, the rivalry between the vette and viper made both cars better... each side kept upping the game. Plus there is something so cool about a 96 blue GTS!

Completely agree with the expressed sentiments. It's a sad day for American high performance cars, regardless of what you drive. I'm of the belief that if it weren't for the Viper, there probably wouldn't be a Z06.

I loved the styling of the Viper, it will truly be missed. I read Aston Martin and Toyota (re: there is no sports car for toyota, anyone remember a certain supra ?) were in the biddings, not sure how its going to pan out.
Honestly, I'd rather Saleen NOT assume control of Viper because they do not have the network or resources required to take care of customers.

So true. It was nice to see each model upping the game with eachother. I also think if there was no ACR, there would have been no ZR1. At least they can go out knowing they had the record at the Ring........for now.

I think eveyone that has contemplated buying a Z06 has also thought about the Viper and vice versa. The fortunate ones that can afford both usually do.
It's a VERY sad day when this great machine is gone from Chrysler's line...

I believe the 7:22 is the fastest time for any factory production car period! The Viper also has the fastest factory production 1/4 mile time also!

If they are smart? Once they are back on there feet they will bring it back an add all the things that its missing. traction control, stability, launch and a more inviting interior. any thought on that?

I think that cars like the Viper and Z06 are going to fight for their very existence. With the new Obama administration and their "Go Green" theme, high performance cars don't fit in the agenda. Can you picture a world full of Prius and Civics and other golf cart like vehicles.
The only hope for Viper would be if someone like Saleen or Calloway buys the plant and production rights and continues to make the cars. It remains to be seen if the production of the V10 motor, assuming someone buys Viper, will continue to be produced at the Chrysler plant or if it will be killed off. The only other vehicle using the V10 is the truck division, and they already have the Cumins diesel. What is a Viper without a V10 ?

I hate to say it, but its starting to feel like 1973 all over again... might be a while to take hold, but I think extreme performance cars are going to be a thing of the past......Lets hope sometime in the future they come back.

I'd love to see Viper AND Corvette sold off to a small focused well funded American group similair to the the groups that bought Lotus and Aston
Imagine forgetting GM and having the CORVETTE AUTO CORP building some sweet US muscle cars and F the Govt
I think then we would see a true US challenge to the Euro cars and maybe even a mid engine Vette
That would truly rock
