This is a fairly easy, do-it-yourself project... it'll take ~3 hours working slowly with two people. The second person is only required to help guide the tank in/out of the fender. It's possible to do with one person, but will take longer.

The reason I installed the LPE tank is HERE. The tank fits like a glove! Workmanship is first class.

Tools
* 7mm to 16mm sockets
* Suitable wrenches / extensions
* Optional: 'grabber tool' and blue tape
* 12 quarts of oil



Oil Tank Removal Steps


Step 1) Raise Car; Remove front passenger-side wheel; Drain oil


Step 2) Remove fender liner
Remove four bolts from bottom of liner


Remove two plastic push-pins from side of liner


Liner is attached to the fender with metal push-clips. Start at lower portion of liner and working upward, carefully pull liner off fender.






Remove one bolt holding fender... this is needed to push the fender out of the way a little for tank removal / installation.





Step 3) Unbolt top of oil tank
Mark one of the oil vapor lines so they don't get swapped when reinstalling (I used yellow tape).
Remove vapor lines by twisting locking tab clockwise and pulling the lines off


Remove two bolts from middle bracket


Use 'grabber tool' to prevent dropping the bolts


Remove one bolt from top



Step 4) Unbolt bottom of tank
Remove oil temp sensor wiring harness


Remove oil lines from bottom of tank


Remove two bottom bracket mounting bolts




With one person holding the top of tank as needed, move bottom of tank to the side and disconnect oil lines; Let oil drain out of lines.



Step 5) Remove tank from car
With one person working at the top and one at the bottom, slide tank down to remove. Carefully move wiring harnesses out of the way.







Step 6) Separate top and bottom of tank
Mark the position of the tanks so the new tank can be installed with the correct orientation

If you're shipping the tank to LPE, you MUST:
* Ship only the bottom half of the oil tank
* Remove the brackets bolted to the bottom of the tank
* Remove the oil temperature sensor
* Remove the silver oil tube (if lifts straight up)
* Remove the black plastic oil screen (It uses locking tabs. Remove by wiggling/pushing the screen toward the 'outside' of the tank)
* Wipe the tank clean of any oil
From their website: If you do not remove these items you will be charged an additional labor and handling charge.

Oil Tank Installation Steps


Step 1) On new tank: install bottom brackets, oil temp sensor, and oil line screen
(Push screen into bore from outside the tank until the locking tabs locate in the groove)


Yes, It really holds 3 more quarts



Step 2) Reassemble top and bottom of tank.
Tighten bolts/studs to 18 lb-ft



Step 3) Replace two oil seals on bottom oil tank lines
Oil Seals are supplied by LPE



Step 4) Reinstall new tank
With one person working at the top and one at the bottom, slide tank up into place. Take care not to pinch any of the wiring harnesses in the way.




Install oil lines. Tighten two bolts to 16 lb-ft
Install two bottom backet bolts. Tighten to 27 lb-ft
Install three top bolts. Tighten to 89 lb-in


Installed tank...plenty of clearance once it's in place!



Step 5) Refill tank with oil
Mine took almost 12 quarts... but i believe an oil change will take 11 quarts +/- as you won't drain all the residual oil in the tank and oil lines.


That's it... go out and enjoy your new LPE Oil Tank.

Fantastic write-up!!!!

I never would have thought of doing this myself without this info; now, I may give it a shot.

LPE should give you a solid discount for priming the pump... so to speak.

Thanks for the detailed "how to" post! I'll be doing my LPE tank install in the next two weeks. This will help me immensely. I am also installing the Aviaid tank baffle so I will add the unique info on the installation of that component to this thread.

This is just one of the mods that I have to finish before our event at Laguna Seca so I hope I get it all done in time.

My oil starvation is very reproducible... i'll retest on those tracks over the next weeks and see how well just the LPE tank works
