Default LS7 Dry Sump Oil Change Procedure

We put this together 3 years ago, and many of these types of documents can be found on our website www.CorvetteLS7.com/forum

Oil Change Procedure

This doc can be taken to any oil change location, and will help assure that they do not miss step. I have even heard of dealers that have screwed up changing the oil on the Z06.

This forum is currently closed to new members, but we could open it up again if there is any interest. Let me know.

Most of the stuff is technical information, but it is dedicated to the Z06 and has no advertising.

This happened to me. I ended up with 10 qts because a GM tech was checking the dipstick with the engine cold and oil in the pan.

Here is the Super Flow bench numbers we had Donaldson do for us. This comparison was between the current Delphi (PowerCore) filter and the one we tested on their dyno in MN.

Test Results

I used this doc to get a local oil change shop to do ours. I still supervised the procedure.

I recommend the new ZR1 oil filter though.

7qts and 8 total for pre-09 Z06. So does this mean i fill 9qts and then add another 1.5 qts after running engine for a while on a 09 z06?

What is the difference between the ZR1 filter and the ZO6? Os it bigger or a better filtering system than the stock ZO6 filter?
.
***I did a search which I should have done before asking. Here is the info I found if anyone else besides me did not know. Do the dealers use this filter now when changing? I do change my own oil and always have.
HIGH PRESSURE OIL FILTER

GM Powertrain has released a new oil filter for the 2009 Corvette. The new design UPF48R oil filter will be used on the following applications:

- LS7 7.0L -- Z06

- LS9 6.2L -- ZR1

With the addition of piston oil cooling nozzles and other unique lubrication system requirements, a new design dual-rotor oil pump is required for the LS9 application. The new design oil pump produces greater volume and higher system oil pressure. To meet those requirements, a new oil filter with higher burst strength is required.

The Ultraguard™ Gold UPF48R filter (U for Ultra and R for Racing) is black in color, has a thicker exterior shell, and can be identified as p/n 12626224 (fig. 7).
figure 7

TIP: The internal components are the same in both the UPF48R and PF48 oil filters.
The UPF48R can be used in applications where the PF48 is specified.

TIP: The UPF48R is required for LS9 applications and is also used for the LS7 application as both engines are built at GM's Performance Build Center.

Simple answer is to follow your owners manual. This was for the 06 model at the time. Changes would be noted in your owners manual.

I could open it every Sunday. That would work. We have no advertising, no fees, some rules, but it is solely dedicated to the LS7.

This might come in handy. I just took my new Z06 in for an oil change last week. Noticed today they used the old filter for 6.2 engines and that they used 10W30 instead of 5W30. Debating whether to take it back and make them do it over or just do it myself.

This is exactly why i do my own oil changes. And yes i would bring it back, they probably charged you a hundo to do it. At least they could do it right.

Yep. $111.00 to be more exact. I would just about as soon do it myself though. I did all my own changes on my LS2 C6 but thought I would have the dealer do them on my Z06. Only problem taking it back... they will say that the PF48 filter is fine and they will deny putting 10W30 in. The only reason I know they did put 10W30 in was because I walked up to the shop door just in time to see the tech pouring in the oil. I noticed it was Mobil1 and had a green label. Did not think much about it. Went to auto parts store to buy a couple of extra quarts. Then realized 5W30 has a blue label and 10W30 has a green label. My shop bill only says Mobil1 synthetic...12qts.

My 09 Z06 came with the PF48 filter from the factory, June 08 build. When I did my first oil change I went with a Mobil1 filter. I also have some K&N oil filters I will use on future oil changes. Both are premium oil filters and are available locally. Both 5w30 and 10w30 are okay to use, but 10w30 should not be used where the car will be started when the temps are very low. Next oil change, use 5w30, and don't worry about the 10w30 oil they put in. I would question the 12 qts though. The 06 thru mid 08 holds 8 qts, mid to end of model year run 08's hold 8.5 qts and 09's hold 10.5 quarts.

Next time you're in Springfield and it's time for an oil change, let me know. I have a 4 post lift and we can have a cold glass of buttermilk while waiting for the oil to drain. I don't know a shop that will let your car sit for a hour while it drains, doing it yourself, no problem.

You have a right to be pissed but don't bump threads that are years old with 0 relevant information.

Trying to get information to help me figure out what happened. Gonna have to make a claim, and I'm looking for anyone who can help me figure this out. This issue, the oil change procedure, is directly relevant to me. Thanks for your advice.

Check if they poured oil in through the valve cover by removing the cap that isn't supposed to be removed
