Default FYI: if you want to change the steering wheel!

Hi,

this is just a technical FYI if you ever want to change the steering wheel. I received mine from APSI a few weeks ago and had no problems installing it, BUT:

If you turn the ignition on or start the car while the airbag is disconnected from that point on the airbag will be disabled and the red airbag light in the dash will stay on

To fix it you have to drive to a Chevy dealer and they have to download the BCM (body computer management, not PCM I was told!) info and send it to GM, then, if all looks OK, the BCM will be reflashed and the light goes off.

I found this out today when I stopped by at the dealership to have my light reset, unfortunately the connection to GM was down so they couldn't do it .

Oh well....just letting you know, this is not like the old days were you connect an ODBC reader and hit reset

Any time you fiddle with the air bags, disconnect the battery. Problem solved.

Duh ......

Better than eating an air bag for lunch.

I think it is also one of the first steps in removing the air bag, next to opening the hood .......

I think they are also BSing you. Use scan tool to clear the DTC's OR 255 ignition cycles w/no malfunctions.

You can also try removing battery power for ten (10) minutes and then reattaching. Remove the ground .

Maybe more going on here.
Normally the SRS system goes through a self check during key up and will clear if there are no faults (or after the bag has been re-connected), no scanner needed.

Center cap on my steering wheel as a dent. (me hitting it with my knuckle after getting pissed off at another driver) how did you pop it off?

Thanks for the info by the way.

Here ya go boys - this is what I used. My steering wheel came off w/ a little tug and I didn't need a puller at all. Total time start to finish - 35 minutes but I had changed my steering wheel on my C5Z.

I think it has to do with GM's liability.

Sound's like you've got that last post about right, Andy. Think about it, the insurance industry would gladly write a check for a new car, than get invovled in million's over a personnal injury/liability suite. You change anything non factory safety related, such as a steering wheel/air bag assembly, you break your neck in a crash, and all your coverage just walk's away. Unfortunately, that's where it's all gotten. Think I'm leaving the safety related stuff alone.

Here is a quick update: After my dealer tried to reset the BCM it turned out that the airbag itsself failed. They orderd a new one which should have been here today but UPS rejected the transport because there is an explosive in it, oh well......will be here tomorrow then (I hope).

On a good note this is my first warrenty case with the car.

What do you charge an hour? I talked to my dealer today & they said 2 hours=$200.00. I said, well I can't say what I said. I may be serious as I live around 45 minutes from you. If I decide to buy the one I am looking at I think I can do it but always like to meet other owners in the area. Having someone around that has done it would be nice also. See ya

Hey, I would be happy to help out in any way I can. The only tools I don't have that you might need would be a steering wheel puller. I thought I would just give it a whirl and see if it would come off and sure enough it did.

PM me if and when you get it and we can work out a time. I would be glad to help you out!
Ron
