Default C6Z Code Reader

Anyone know of a OBDII reader that will for-sure read the codes on a C6Z? I tried the free auto parts store's service and in both cases the reader failed to connect. Took it to the dealer (who treated me very fairly) and now 160 miles later the check engine light is on again. Won't hesitate to take it back to the dealer but would like to avoid the down time if possible.

HP tuners does. My obd2 bluetooth dongle for my android phone also reads codes/datalogs/etc. It is neat. I'll sell it.

When you get a reader make sure it is CAN (controller area network) bus enabled otherwise it won't work on any newer vehicle. You can find them on fleabay that will read and erase codes for about sixty bucks or so and unlike the C5, you require one to erase codes on the C6.

I just bought an Innova CAN 3140. Will do OBD1 & 2. Tool is firmware and definition upgradeable via the Internet. Retails for around $400 got it for about $200. It will give the full definition of the Code, not just the number.

Haven't used it on the Vett yet, but worked very well on my OBD1 truck.

I'll never understand why the C6's dont display codes on the DIC yet C5s do. It was such a nice feature on the C5's

My Auto X-Ray 6000 tool scan's the ZO-6 and any other car I've tried it on. These are a little more money, but capable of doing much more than just a simple scan, including computer data transfer and internet upgrades. It's a bit hard to figure out, but a nice tool.

However, it is limited to Powertrain codes which are only a subset of the codes a car can set. There are ~ 547 codes on a C6 only 262 are Powertrain codes.

Yeah, I realize the scanner's for the casual back yard mechanic dont do nearly the stuff of the multi thousand dollar unit's used by the pro's, and may be a good thing. Most of us aren't equipped to do the more sophisticated repair's, and unless you work with such high tech scanners daily, it's doubtful you'd be able do any good with them anyway.

On the C5s people are using the ability to see all of the codes to maintain their own cars. All codes do is tell a person where to look for a problem. Most of the stuff isn't that sophisticated but if you don't know where to look it gets really hard. A code reader that can see all of those codes can save you lots of money. I can't read the codes on my Tahoe and when I get a ride control error I don't know if it is a wheel sensor, a shock absorber, the control module sensor or the level ride air pump. I have the diagnostic procedures for each of the codes in the system but it is difficult to diagnose without the codes. If I could read the codes I would be able to narrow down the problem. Other than repairing wiring or connector problems everything else is just parts replacement. Guessing is an expensive way to go about fixing those kinds of problems. Besides most of the problems occur in the non powertrain area. Over the last 15 years I can count on one hand (and not use all of the fingers) the number of powertrain failures I have had across a number of different GM cars but there were 5+ times as many non powertrain failures.

has anyone had experience with the Aero Force products? google "aeroforce gauge" and it will come up. I am still researching but it looks like a gauge that can display about any engine parameter you want as well as bring up codes (and clear them)

I am interested in any feedback people have. It looks pretty cool on paper and the price will not be that bad if you need some gauges in your car. For the average person it might be pricey but for someone who want to kill two birds with one stone, this may work. You can even set it as a shift light.

Also, check this thread for a cool mounting option

and here is more info

I picked this one up last month when they had a sale for $~30. I can verify it works. Not fancy-- shows code and you can erase it. O2 sensor lit up the SEL (as it does every so often when I push her hard--even after the TSB reflash was done)-- so at a stop light, hooked up the reader-- read the code, erased, cleared, before the light turned green.

I used one in my TrailBlazer SS. It is okay but honestly the fonts are so damn small it was nearly impossible to read it when driving. It's a cool concept but not as well executed as it could have been.

Have you seen the Scan Gauge? http://www.scangauge.com/
