Default New (Bad) Engine Noise!

I hope someone might have some ideas here. This is a new sound and has never done this before. Drove the Vette to work this morning and I am hearing a clacking sound at about a 1 per rev on the motor. The sound is barely noticeable in 6 gear at 55 - 60 mph but is more noticeable when you are above about 1500 RPM or at idle. When I pull into work I pop the hood and the noise is very loud and like I said before about 1 per rev. It's not a normal lifter tick or piston slap and will sometime vary in intensity.

My coolant temp was about 196 and my oil temp is only running about 145. Oil Pressure at 1400 rpm was 50 psi and at idle is 31 psi. Car is bone stock except for a shift ****, floor mats and polished stainless steel inserts on the rear fascia.

The car is a 2008 and was built Dec 11, 2007 with the engine build date of Nov 29, 2007.

I am wondering, especially from the folks that have experienced a rocker failure if you think it may be a rocker arm failure?

Thanks

Mark

I don't know what is wrong with your car, I haven't seen an 08 on here with a rocker arm failure. I have however seen a few 08's need new cams. If your car is still under warranty, I would set up an appt. If not, pull the valve covers and take a good look at the valve train.

Thanks It's still under warranty and I went thru the LS7 Rocker failure thread and I did find a Mar 2008 build that has a rocker failure....

.............at 23,000 miles, my cam and all 16 lifters were replaced due to several cam lobe faces that had worn off. Ticking at 1500, 2200 was really loud.........you could almost feel it through the dashboard!

SEE AVATAR picture for lobe wear........
Was told that the cam was not "hardened" properly.

BTW, the car was not raced, tracked and had the oil/filter changed by dealer every 4-5K, or when DIC showed 30% oil life remaining.

Now at 31,000, no problems, and car runs and sounds quiet.

Well its not the rockers...... But this is what the sound reminds me of, take a large drill bit put it in the drill press. then get a thick piece of steel and start drilling at about 600 - 700 rpm without any lube....

That is the sound that I am hearing......... Checked the crank pulley and no wobble and the same for the other pulleys (no wobbling).

I guess it will be a trip to the dealer to get it checked out.....

Wow ..

How much of a performance hit did you have with the cam worn like that?

How much better did the car run after the bad parts were replaced?

Does it sound like something is loose or like a rattle from inside the engine? When I did a cam on my C5Z I used brand new ac delco ls7 lifters... After 4k miles I had a terrible noise from the motor, like a metallic rattle sound, not really a tap or knock sound... I checked the complete topend then replaced the lifters as a process of elimination. New lifters, problem solved.... Good luck!

Can you take a video of the sound so I can compare it to mine? That way after you find out whatever from the dealer I can figure out what I need to do (I have no warrenty)

Does it sound like your tick comes from low in the engine? More from the left side or right side?

............moderate power loss, especially at higher RPM's.....but after new cam AND lifters......car pulled noticeably stronger throughout the whole RPM range and not one single tick, to this day............

It's more of a clacking sound than a tick with sometimes a metal scraping sound.....

It's to late to do a video of the sound as it is already at the dealer.

Update Fri May 6, 2011.....

Just talked to the dealer and they still don't have my cam. They said they had to get their service rep involved as the cams are on national back order. Sooo..... not sure when I'll get my vette back.

I told them that if they can't get one they could always put in a GM hot cam if they will still warranty it

Hopefully next week will bring good news..........
