Default Crap! I painted my Z06 mufflers, now they smell of paint after a drive!!

A few months back, I bought a set of Z06 mufflers with the mod already done. I took them in to my dads shop, removed all paint with industrial grade paint remover, sanded the **** out of them, primed them and finally, applied 550 degree high temp black and silver spray paint. I let them bake in the booth for a little bit and that was that. They came out amazing. Here are the pics:

The problem now is, after a drive, or if I'm stopped at a red light with the windows down, I smell paint. The underside of the mufflers is starting to burn away the paint. What did I do wrong? Should I have used a higher temp paint? If so, what degree? I made this post so others wouldn't make the same mistake...now I have to do it all again.

You are probably burning the primer and not the paint

That's my theory, but will it eventually all burn off? I wouldn't mind if it did, the tips are all anyone sees anyways.

Did you use high temp paint? If so it might not be burning off but just heating up for the first few times and that can cause a smell. If you used standard paint it might burn off. Either way it either will or it will not. If it is actually the primer burning then over time the top coat will be burned as well.

I used high temp paint good for 550 degrees F. The mufflers have been on there for about 300 miles. Noticed the burning smell the day I drove it home after the install.

Well it DID look good, now it looks burnt on the cans (it's yellowing out) and it smells. I'll post up some pics of it on the car tomorrow.

I'm not taking a shot at you. When something like this happens to me, I always say, "Never time to do it right, but always time to do it over."

Yea, I took my time though and thought through every step. Except the heat burning off the primer....

High temp should not have had primer under it. Now that you are here the way back is to deal with the smell or remove the paint altogether.

550dF paint is probably not your best long term paint option if you want to really use the car (WOT) for more than a dozen miles at a time.

Well I took a look again today, it seems the black paint is chipping off around where the straight through pipes are welded on. No paint is chipping so to speak on the cans...just burning off. I'm hoping that after enough driving, it'll all be chipped/burned off and hopefully won't smell anymore...or I'll buy new mufflers. It's just too much work to get these off and on this car.

Why did you paint them when you can't see them anyway?

Surefire fix:

1) Place skunk in road.
2) Run over skunk.

No more muffler odor.

I used hi temp barbecue paint on the back of mine with no primer. Haven't had any issues at all. I suspect the primer also.
