Z06 vs ZL1 Camaro at Nurburgring
I was just wondering if any of you have some more information on the new Camaro running a 7:42 at the ring. I find it hard to believe that the camaro ran a better time than our Z06s. I am a fan of the new camaro and would love to have one in my garage but I wouldn't give up my Z06 for it. I know it has 80 more HP but it weighs more and I think it has less rubber too. For me its really a win win because I'm a big Chevy fan. Just wondering if any of you know more about the time. Was it a rolling start?, what kind of tires, etc. Thanks.

The original ring run with a Z06 when the car first came out in 2006 was 7:42. That was done however on a standing start. The times recorded now is with a flying start and there is a section of track where they don't record lap times so cars can slow down and return to the pit area.

If you are not in the right gear in your z06 running one from a roll you will get surprised.
Its a 12 second quarter mile car. A couple of road test mags have pegged it at 12.2 to 12.3 running 115 to 117mph. Our Z's are 11.5 to 11.8 at 122 to 125 mph in the mags.

The looks are begining to grow on me. I saw a camaro (not zl1) coming down the road, and for a second the front end reminded me of a 1977/78 trans am.

Latest 'Ring' performance by a Z06 was stellar
7:22.68 to be exact . . . base specification car with optional super-slick track DOT competition tires (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure) and Z07 package
That said, the ZL1 Camaro, at about 19 seconds slower, is no slouch when you consider all the extra weight.

The ZL1 exists to do battle against the GT500, not a Corvette. We should be rejoicing that GM has the guts to manufacture cars like the ZR1, Z06, ZL1 and CTS-V.
They all serve a different market and clientele.

And I also think the Challenger looks sweet even though I'm not a Mopar fan.

ummmmmmmmmmm . . . . not so IMO.
Drag strip time - maybe the Gt500 is faster IF it can get traction. Camaro does have active launch control . . .
Any real track or road course - Camaro has independent tuned suspension and 3rd generation magnetic selective ride versus GT500's live axle. I'm betting the ZL1 is quicker. It tuned a 7:41 lap time at the Ring - let's see what the GT500 does there.

That auto with the tap shift in the ZL1 is pretty impressive as well as it is making its way into the vette soon. They spent a lot of time getting the ZL1 just right and getting the suspension to perform as well as it does.
I was glad to see the Camaro come back and was VERY excitied to see what they did with the ZL1. But everytime I park next to one I can not get over how huge it is compared to a corvette. To take something that big and heavy and be able to throw it around a track as well as it does...I am impressed.
I just hope they put the same or more R&D into the C7.
