Default Unadvertised changes to 2012 Z06

I know the 2011 Z06 exhaust has changed to mimick the ZR1 having an X pipe instead of an H, and ZR1 mufflers which have their own sound. I spent an hour in the garage just now and looked over the car pretty well. noticed the following:

1. the stock Z06 air filter is the same as the ZR1 air filter!

2. the X-pipe is completely different than the OEM ZR1 pipe i have hanging in my garage. the new 2012 Z06 X-pipe contains two small cats with shields and the X has been moved further back towards the mufflers. it even says ZR1 written on the X-pipe. can anyone chime in on this?

There was an article here on the exhaust change for 2012 models

Mark, you will want to check part numbers and look very carefully at the Z06 and Zr1 air filters. I bought a ZR1 air filter for my Z06 as it is supposed to flow up to 38% more air. When I got the ZR1 filter it "looked" just like the Z06. I checked part numbers and they were different. Then I checked the spacing of the holes on the inlet surface of the two filters and it was clear that there was much more spacing on the ZR1. Subsequently in a thread on this, Halltech responded that they had done the development work on what became the ZR1 filter and it was indeed different.

It is possible that GM has gone to just one filter, but the current ZR1 filter is not the same as the factory unit that came in my 09Z and was not the same as the current part number GM lists for the Z06.

I'll try to find the thread on this and will supplement this response if I find it. Here it is, see post #13

ccryder, you hit the nail on the head. did not see that article. looks like the 09-11 ZR1 catless X-pipe will not fit the 12-13 year model.

AzDave

I wrote the original thread on comparing the air filters years ago, LS3 vs LS7 vs LS9. I have 3 ZR1 air filters, one of them being the final prototype that was used to design the ZR1 filter we use today straight from the labs at donandson engineering. there is no part number stamped on my 2012 OEM Z06 filter. the filter media is the exact same used in the 09 ZR1. in fact, the screen mesh is glued to the filter and screws into the filter box just like the ZR1. I have a new ZR1 filter in the original box. I pulled the new 2012 Z06 air box housing and removed the filter from the housing. they are the same. If you want to get technical i think the ZR1 filter had 23 wraps of media and the Z06 had 22, but that's splittin hairs

Whats it take to fit the new filter on an 08, and would it be worth it to bother? By the way, I thought at first that could have been the new headlight design for the C7 in that pic above. That'll get your attention
