Expected life of original battery?
I bought my Z in August 2006; still have original battery...started wondering how much longer it will last...also wondering what's the worst that could happen when it dies one of these days. Will I be able to get into the car to open the hood, to jump-start it? Or will I be locked out, and forced to crawl in thru the hatch after I open it with my Hide-A-Key?
It is interesting to note that the original battery is still going strong on my 2003 Cobra that I took delivery of in June 2002 - almost 10 years ago.
Both vehicles are parked indoors, and driven every two weeks or so, for about 5,000 miles/year.
Wonder if the Z battery will last a decade?
Thanks for any thoughts,
CL
Happy Easter, everyone. Be sure to remember the first Easter, almost 2,000years ago...and what happened then. There were witnesses who saw it, and wrote it down, so that we know today.

You may be close to the end of usefull life. I lost my original 2007 battery last weekend at a car show. No signs that it was weak or going bad until it just died...and when it died it died. Wouldn't even open the doors or hatch. I'm happy with the 5 years I got out of it.

Two to four years seems to be when the majority of the batteries go. Depends on use and temperature. Here in the desert southwest, batteries take a beating. A lot of Corvettes are stored for part of the year (battery tender is important). Also a some Corvettes sit on the dealer's lot for an extended time before sold. If a battery gets completely drained the life will be shortened. I had mine replaced under warranty after less than three years.
You will hear stories of both LONG long life and SHORT life OEM batteries. The Corvette is very sensitive to low voltage. Strange things happen when the batteries start to fail (or the other common failure mode is - no problems one day, and dead the next).
Cheers,
Jim

My 06 has the original battery. Stored for 6 months at a time without a tender and it just started my car last week flawlessly. I know I am on borrowed time though.

OP, to avoid battery failure at the most inopportune time I'd suggest putting a new one in now. If you get stranded, not all places will have a battery for the Z06 available. With that said, you should also read your owners manual. You commented that you'd have to crawl through the rear hatch, that is totally unnecessary. Open the rear hatch with the key, and pull the cord on the left side and the drivers door will open, then of course just pull the hood latch.
Your car has alot of features to help you avoid problems or issues. Knowing about them before hand will save you some time and trouble.

I believe mine is the orginal in my 07, it has started to act up lately so I need to replace it soon. The first time it acted up, I drove the car the day before then went to start it the next morning and it just clicked, charged it up and its been working fine until the other day I had my windows tinted and for obvious reasons the doors and hatch were open for an extended period of time (about 2-3 hours) and the same click when trying to start got a jump and all is well again. I know if keep procrastinating this thing is going to leave me stranded. lol.

You must be blessed. Battery life must be a hit or miss thing for the Z. 10 days in my garage then it's battery tender time.

2020 C5 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
Longest OEM battery was in my C4...8 years...only driven in Spring and Summer, always on a tender during Fall and Winter. My C5 lasted 6 years, same conditions.

I prolly need to buy one real soon just to be safe but I have an original battery from a build date of 08/05 Z06 starts up no problems (knock on wood). Original owner did say he would have issues if he wouldn't drive it for weeks at a time and try to start it so after that he always left it on a battery tender if he wasn't driving it.
I did let it sit for about 4-5days a couple weeks ago it did seem a little weak on the start up
