Default Can worn out rears be used as Slicks?

As the title says.I have Bridgestone PPs worn to the wear bars. Will these be worth saving to use at the track. On the street they do not seem to hook up as well as they use to.

Usually....no. All the sticky rubber compound that was in the tread is now gone and you're getting close to the tire carcass.

I usualy can't even get good tire smoke off bald tires when I use them for burnout pictures

They are probably getting very hard, which can cause more wheel hop and break something. Slicks are a very soft compound and typically have a flexing sidewall that absorbs the shock when you launch.

I would make a video burnout and then toss the old tires..

If you are on a road course they probably will do well. The rule of thumb is if they aren't throwing sparks they are still good. You do have to pay attention to them cording but if they are at the wear bars you can probably get 4 or 5 days out of them. With less tread you get less tire squirm. With them being worn down to the harder rubber it will take a little more heat to get them sticky but you should be able to get them hot enough after a couple of hard laps.

With all the heat cycling your tires have been through, and their age, I would think they are pretty hard by now.

Are there any rules for track days regarding tread depth?

No, unless your intention is to slide all over the place or hydroplane out of control.

I just replaced a pair of Michelin PS 2's that had 46,000 miles on them and when I took them off I discovered that the entire center of the tire was slick. They had been on the car for 3.5 years and were hard as rocks. I did a big burnout on a deserted street and not only did they provide no traction, they didn't even leave black marks on the street. I couldn't even tell where my burnout was. By far, the biggest factor in a tire's traction is the rubber compound. Could you use them? Sure. Would they be better than a new treaded tire. No way.

I had my reasons for asking but can not get into it as the subject is frowned upon on this forum.

For track days, new full tread depth tires are frowned upon and tires that have cord showing are a no-no. Usually tires that are down to the wear bars are fine for track days, even though they may now have great stick.

Full tread depth means tread squirm which leads to tire overheating and slippy slidey conditions, not great for learning a consistent line.

I'd like to have some of the 10"32 tread on my new PSS worn off before I use them for track days, but I still have good tread left on my less-sticky NT-05 track tires so there's time to wear the PSS down.

I used my worn out NT-05's at my last track day, and they were the worst tires I've ever used on track. Much worse than when they were new.

Worst because of balance or because of lack of stick? I know you do timed runs where lack of stick would be a real issue.

Both. Terrible lack of overall grip, I lost over 10 seconds a lap (granted, that's compared to a new set of V710's, but still). I don't know how my used NT05's compared to the same tires new, but I now there were a lot slower. Also, when you drive on a set of tires and wear them down on the street, the rears (at least in my experience) tend to wear more and get more cycled out than the fronts. So when you hit the track, not only have you lost overall grip, but you've lost a disproportionate amount of grip at the rear = oversteer problems... very dangerous!

Exactly! I'm not trying to break ***** here but if worn out street tires are no longer good on the "street" (their intended purpose) what on earth would make one think they will be good for the "track"?

Many HPDEs require a minimum 3/32" tread depth as part of the pre-event vehicle inspection. Agree with the other comments that it is a bad idea even if permissable.

What area of the country are you in? I've run many HPDE's in the Northeast and some here in the Southwest and not seen that 3/32" tread requirement.
