Default Titanium Exhaust valve

For inquiring minds - I ran the weights on my new titanium exhaust valves compared to the stainless. The titanium is 57% less!

his math is right, however he expressed the outcome wrong. The SS valves are 57% heavier than the titanium.

And tons of people have titanium Akropovic exhaust system which cost around $3.5k on street cars where it makes absolutely no difference lol. No one seems to bat and eye at that so which is crazier lighter valves which will improve any engines performance or a 10-20lb lighter exhaust system which seems to primarily be installed on cars that will never see a track and only putt around town?

To the OP congrats on the purchase, I'm running TiMo intake and exhaust valves on my self on my new engine. You are going to like them!

The titanium are Del West. The stainless are Rev. $750.00 per set. (that is $93.75 per valve for you math critics out there).

Interesting.

I don't know if what you are weighing there is a REV Extreme exhaust valve, but:

I'm looking at my invoice, and my REV Extreme exhaust valves were $40.625 each, $325.00 for the set.

The Rev Extremes are said to be 98 grams by more than one source.

Ah. So on the way to the scale the advertised 98g Revs have picked up a couple pounds. Or grams. Not the first time advertised component specs came in a little off the mark, though.

For those interested in Ti exhaust valves I saw a blurb in the Ferrea catalog for a version that is supposed to be engineered to withstand high temperatures...

Dunno if they have any blanks for the LS7. Dunno if these are any better than other off-the-shelf Ti exhaust valves out there. I did learn that they will custom build a sodium filled exhaust valve for the LS7... minimum order 1,000 pieces.

.

Thanks, probably overkill for most but I felt it wise insurance for a track-duty engine. Why trust an expensive forged engine to a $150.00 set of valves (I have been there already).

Because supposedly the valve isn't the problem. It's the guides.

And I'll wager my Ferrea hollow-stem valves are just as reliable at $37 per valve. Combined with the titanium retainers, the valvetrain is barely heavier than stock.

But good luck with that.

I run stainless valves @ over 8k rpm on my race car SBC, I doubt 7k is a whole lot for the ls7 on SS valves with some good springs to handle the extra weight.

As mentioned before, I found that interesting too as the first post in this thread lists them at 98 grams.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-z...tte-forum.html

And there are others. Also, I called myself and was told the weight was 98g.

Well 'no' - the way he typed it if you read it, he's saying the Ti are 57% less than the SS which means 57% of 100 grams would make the Ti valve 43 grams and it's not according to the scales.

I know what he meant but he made his statement backwards.

Now 64g x 57% = 100g, that math works......as YOU stated to which I agree

Everything is a total combination, what is the spring life, diameter, and pressures? A SS valve can be reliable if the research is put in to properly set it up.

Basically, he should have just said 36% lighter. Round the 100.5 to 100 to make the math easy and you have the titanium valve showing 36 grams or 36% lighter than the stainless. Now if you want to calculate a little more accurately then you use the following formula Percent lighter = 1- (64/100.5) which makes them 36.3% lighter.

Wow, are you guys Corvette owners or contract lawyers? The titanium exhaust valve weighs 57% less than the stainless (100.5 - 64.0 = 36.5 /64.0 while the stainless is 36.3% heavier than the titanium (36.5/100.5). My point was the difference is significant.

Yeah, we can be sticklers. By the way your formula is wrong. You don't divide the 36.5 by 64. It isn't 36.5 grams lighter or heavier than itself. The stainless is 57% higher in weight than the titanium since you divide 100.5/64 to get 1.570313. Subtract 1 to get the percent heavier.

Bill
