I too had this exact problem on my original motor which subsequently blew up on the track. Found the metal ring of the seal on the drain plug.

Was the damaged seal on the valve that dropped?

This was found before the motor blew. They replaced all of them. I had new springs put in at the time. But motor blew some time after that.

I track my car but the stock components cannot hold up to the use

Just a quick update: the oil filter is clean, there are tiny little (barely visible) chips in it, and only a handful of these. Pics to come soon.

Is it possible that the crap I thought was metal strips is actually from the head gasket? I revisited the rag pictured (God I wish I saved that metal better) and the metal "strips" turn into powder just by shifting them around. My first picture has some of this powder on the rag already. So, I'm still waiting for the oil analysis kit, the clean filter has convinced me I might not have a major issue and I'm going to run her lightly and drop the oil again. Any suggestions or comments?

I would not expect the head gasket to have magnetic properties that would collect on your drain plug. The chips did look like metal to me. The normal "fuzz" does disintegrate to nothing but fine paste when you wipe it off the drain plug. One possibility is that when the work was done on your engine, they missed cleaning some of the chips.

Rather than worrying, wait for the oil analysis.

I can't tell from the photo you posted, but do your metal pieces look like they could be from this?

The material looks a lot like that, but it's difficult to be sure.

Here's the oil analysis: how does this compare to what you guys are used to seeing? any idea why the magnesium is so high?

Magnesium is a detergent additive. I've seen some samples where it is in the 500's and some where it is less than 20, all Mobil 1 5W30. Maybe they changed the additive package at some point. In any case, it is nothing to worry about.

Bearing material shouldn't be magnetic.

Except for the iron (31), the results are very close to what I got on my last M1 5W-30 test from BL.
