Toyo R888, Michelin Pilot SS, or?
I'm trying to choose the best street/autocross tire. The Toyo R888 and Michelin Pilot SS are correct fit for the stock sizes. Michelin Cup tires are too pricey. I'm currently using Cooper RS3S, but I think I'm leaving a lot of the Z06 performance on the table with them. Heavy rain will be avoided. Who has experience these tires? Is there anything better?

I prefer the PSS for a great all around tire. I use the Toyo R888's as my track tire in 18" w/ CCW c10 rims. Toyos are great track tires but do whine on the street. Even decent it wet conditions on the track but noisy on street.

The R888's are a DOT track tire and have much more grip than the PSS (my street tires, great). On the track coming out of a tight 2nd gear corner, NT-05's and PSS would not let me get full throttle until track-out. The R888's could take full throttle right about the apex.
The R888's do whine like snow tires on the street. They are suitable for driving to/from track events, but I wouldn't use them as my daily driver tires. It all depends on how serious you are about the autocrossing. Get yourself a second set of stock wheels used (about $5-600 for the set) and use the stickiest tire you are willing to drive to the event on if you really want your best track times.

No problem, but as others mentioned, it is really a track tire. I use them on a different set of rims so I can drive to the track. The do whine. Definitely not a good choice for a street tire for only that reason. They are hands down the stickiest of the tires mentioned here. If you progress w/ autocross some events do not allow R888's as they are an unfair advantage and usually allow up to a 200 wear rating. I think the r888's are 80 or 100? As you progress in any tracking it is so hard (impossible) to have dual purpose tires and brakes. In the beginning yes but soon after you will need purpose built equipment. Most of all have fun!

It appears the Pirelli Zero Trofeo R that was developed specifically for the Camaro Z28 and had incredible reviews and reputation is now available in a large number of sizes including our sizes. Not cheap, but iuf this is the same compound as on the Z28, I may try a set.

Burning Brakes
for those of you that have had r888's, how are they on mtn roads? I currently have the MPSS in stock sizes and they're great, but wondering how the r888's might be as well besides the noise. Not a daily driver btw

Like all DOT track tires, the R888's take a little hard use to come up into their working range. Once warm they have much more grip than the PSS, as should be expected for a track tire vs a (great) street tire like the PSS.

Can I expect more miles out of the PSS than the GY? I've always liked the way runflats respond quickly on turn in. Are the non runflats as responsive?

Dave, I'm considering the Michelin Pilot SS for the rears on my 06 Z. My 2nd set of GY runflats are down to the wear bars after only 10,000 miles. I seem to recall reading somewhere that these appear narrower in the stock size than the Goodyears. Do I need to go up to 335 or 345's to get the same width/appearance as the GY?

The PSS non-ZP's are a little soft on turn-in, but even in track use I have not found that to be any big issue. The 275's on the front with stock alignment or street alignment will have mid-corner understeer, but it is not heavy push and is most likely an issue only for road course driving. They are fine tires. I now have a set of Toyo R888's for track use and driving to/from the track and they have much more grip as should be expected from a DOT track tire compared to a great street tire like the PSS.
Mixing ZP's and non-ZP's is not a good idea and mixing brands is also not a good idea. If ultimate grip and performance is not really an issue for you if you only do reasonable street driving, the Nitto Invo's may be a choice for cost, tread wear and low noise. I'd not consider them a real performance tire as the NT-05 is much more performance oriented and even they have about 10% less grip than the PSS.

NT-01 are great tires. I've used them on the street for years. Gone through 2 sets. My car is not a daily driver, just use it for canyon carving with the NT-01's. I have separate auto-x tires.
