Default What is black electrical box on windshield for?

There's a black box measuring about 1 3/4" x 9" adhered to the upper portion of the windshield to the right of the center rear view mirror.

This box has been dropping off the mounting tape on the windshield in hot weather. There's a short bit of wiring at the top edge that runs up under the headliner.

What is the box for? OnStar or satellite radio antenna? Rain sensor?

Can I just use sticky-back tape to re-adhere it?

The original tape has a round 'blister' or sort of a hole punched in the tape, like something is supposed to look through it, but the box does not seem to have a related spot to match up with the "blister".

Thanks for your help.

Yes you can. No issues with just disconnecting it. Removed mine. Just pull the connector out from the front of the Windshield trim piece to disconnect and tuck the one side back in.

Be careful, removing OnStar is going to tank your resale value.

Just disconnecting the antenna is easy to reverse. Does nothing to resale value. Rest of system is still intact and functional except for the signal transmission and reception. The box only contains an antenna. One single coax connector. Big ugly box for an antenna.
