Brake Question
I'm thinking of replacing my brakes on my 07 Z06. Thinking of putting on full set of ZR1 brakes to reduce weight of car. Any one know how much weight I could take off if any.. Have any of you tried this.
Thanks Ellis

Not sure of the overall weight reduction, but it's not as much as you'd think because the ZR1 calipers are heavier than the ZO6 ones. A cheaper option may be to replace the ZO6 rotors with lighter ones from Performance AFX or Zip Product ones.

Agreed. Some light weight two piece rotors for $800 is a much better option.

I have been thinking of just installing the two piece steel rotors. I agree it should cost less. My thinking is rotating mass weight would be less with the ZR1 setup.
I am hoping some one has weighed the ZR1 setup to see if there is much difference between it and the Z06 brakes. Would like to see where I would get the most for the money

$800 vs $5k+. Even if it was 2-3lbs more, no way it is cost effective.

I was interested in a new set of ZR1 Brembo gray calipers for around $1,500 but if I had to go with new pads on top of rotors, than that wasn't going to be worth it for me this time around.
Just pulled the trigger on a new set of C6 Z06/GS yellow calipers by PBR before all the NOS goes away and will look to get what I can for my OE red ones with 6.5k miles on them. Those are what I've had my eye on for quite awhile now, and I think that color contrast will pop with crystal red.

Its on the Z06 links at the top of the page.

Looks like about - 28lbs for the rotors.
Also + 11lbs for ZR1 calipers.
Saving 17lbs I think.
Dave.

Don't forget that you'd need larger wheels in order to run the zr1 calipers/rotors. That's more weight getting added further away from the axis of rotation.
edit: After checking the weight of the Cup wheels, which are the lightest oem 19/20 combo, you'd essentially be only saving about 3 or 4 pounds in total static weight. However much mass has been added further from the axis of rotation, due to the wheel and rotor diameters being larger, surely cancels out the static weight savings though.

If weight reduction is the only goal...Coleman two-piece and call it done. They shave something like 32 lbs off the car IIRC. Racing brake also offers lightweight two-piece rotors, that will shave ~26 lbs off the car.
Now if you're looking for improved braking performance...that's another story. But I would still go with an aftermarket BBK over retrofitting a ZR1 setup. Just my 2 cents...

From the Z06 OEM and Aftermarket Parts Weight List
OEM Front Rotor---->OEM ZR1 (16.2lbs) (-10.3lbs/-20.6lbs)
OEM Rear Rotor------>OEM ZR1 16.2lbs (-3.7/-7.4lbs)
OEM Front Caliper------->OEM ZR1 16.12 (+4.68lbs/+9.36lbs)
OEM Rear Caliper------->OEM ZR1 10.34 (+.72lbs/+1.44lbs)
As others have pointed out, you're far better off by just getting a lighter aftermarket rotor that will work with the Z06 caliper.
For example, either of these are almost exactly the same weight loss as the ZR1 rotor, but don't use the heavier ZR1 caliper:
OEM Front Rotor---->Coleman 2 pc. 16.25 lbs (-10.25 lbs/-20.5lbs pair)
OEM Front Rotor---->Perf. AFX(slotted)2pc 16.5 lbs (-10 lbs/-20lbs pr.)
OEM Front Rotor---->OEM ZR1 (16.2lbs) (-10.3lbs/-20.6lbs)
OEM Rear Rotor------>OEM ZR1 16.2lbs (-3.7/-7.4lbs)
OEM Front Caliper------->OEM ZR1 16.12 (+4.68lbs/+9.36lbs)

I ask because if you're trying to get the car to put down quicker lap times on a road course it's probably not worth it.
If you're trying to go quicker in a straight line it might be but others would know about that.
