Zr1 or Z06
Hi all,
I'm in the market to buy either a 2010 ZR1 or a 2010 ZO6. Both have about 20000 miles. Obviously the ZR1 is more expensive but doesn't have the valve drop issues like the ZO6. The ZR1 is already there all I would do is intake exhaust and tune. The ZO6 I would replace the heads camshaft intake exhaust. Is it worth the extra money for the ZR1 or better to buy the ZO6 and with the money saved have the engine produce the same or even more horsepower than the ZR1., given everything else as far as interior so on and so forth are pretty much the same. Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated. If I went with the ZO6 or ZR1 American Heritage performance would do the work.

And z06s are way more fragile spin bearings valve dropping. If I could do it all over again I’d save a bit more and would of got a zr1 for 52k

I love my C6Z, and I wanted an NA 427...something that we may never see from GM again. If that doesn't mean much to you, and you can swing the cost of a ZR1...I would say grab a ZR1 while you can at what I feel are some incredible deals out there on those cars.

If you can afford it, ZR1 all day long. You can mod the ZR1 and have stock drivability with 600rwhp or more. That is not the case on a Z06 if you add a cam - you can get some surging and the smell. The ZR1 is more exclusive and is likely to hold it's value better. I chose the Z06 because it was $30K less - best bang for the buck.

I don’t know what is so special about a car that has practically a LS3 motor with a blower on it. I’m not sure the C6 ZR1 will be such a collectible since they are coming out with a C7 variant now. A 7.0L V8 will never be put into a Vette again and will go down in history as the largest motor ever put into the Vette. This decision really comes down to horsepower goals.. Rehardless of my opinion, buying a car based on its status or possible future collectibility should never factor into your decision... Just buy whichever car really moves you when you are behind the wheel driving it.

You're right about the LS7, great motor, will go down in history for being a great motor (because it really is) and also the biggest darkest cloud in history from having defective heads that were improperly machined from the supplier (proven, backed up by GM who admitted to it and countless others that have mic new out of the box heads that are/were still off) and being a Russian roulette
Then there's the numbers...30k Z06 made, 4500 ish ZR1, like it or not, in 20 years, if we go by what's "collectible" from the 60's it would be the lowest produced car or options (again back then I'm sure the lowest numbers were due to less popular options or just too expensive of car)...but who really knows...
ZR1 is by far the easiest car to get big power numbers while still sounding stock and driving like a stock car...but the Z06 has its charm with the 427... I had both, I stayed with the ZR1...my opinion, if you really want something unique, get a Carbon edition Z06 (a real one, not a Z07 that came after)...def the best track car hands down of the platform, and they made 300 of them? (can't recall)...still will have the heads to fix but....get some Mamo's heads on it and done. food for thoughts!

Hello,
Let me speak from experience, since I have now owned both.
I bought an 09Z06 with low miles. I was told to immediately replace the valves and add bronze guides and that would make the car "bullet proof" Less than 1000 miles later (after adding steel valves and bronze guides) the engine grenaded. It cost me 20k to put a new engine in that car (at which time I did do some upgrades to make around 600rwhp). IMO almost ALL of them are ticking time bombs. If you talk to the right people they will explain that there is a major defect in the head design of that car. Some cars have survived and even hit high mileage BUT every single c6Z I have seen with more than 30k on the odo has had crazy loud valvetrain. I'm talking clickity clank loud, hearing it easily from the cabin. That alone would drive me nuts.
I sold the car not long after I replaced the engine.
I now own an 09ZR1. IMO it's not even in the same dimension as the Z06. Selective ride, carbon ceramic brakes, stronger transmission, stronger clutch, stronger axles, carbon all over the place and an *** ripping engine that can run low 10's stock on just tires! Better interior as well (not by much). The Zr1 feels like a totally different car. They are incredibly rare, you don't see hardly any on the road. It's the first car I have owned that I am keeping stock because of how fast it is.
The C6z's have really come down in price. High 30's and low 40's for mint low mileage ones. The Zr1 is high 50's to low 70's for mint low mileage ones. That's a pretty big price difference but if you can swing it you will literally be getting a 120-130K supercar for half price! Can't beat that!
And to further help you out, here are some pics of the my grenaded C6Z!

The LS7 is actually a bored out small block. The 427, 396 and 454 cid of the 60's and early 70s were the true big block "rat" motors. They were big and heavy, whereas the LS7 is smaller and lighter, but same displacement as it is based on bore and stroke. As I understand it, the cylinder walls or the block itself is thinner, which make it less desirable for turbos or superchargers according to the performance shop I go to. That is why most go with a cam.

Every 3LZ 08 and up Z06 is a ZR1 interior. I have it. No biggie. I would want both if it was up to me. Love my Z06.

Hi all,
I'm in the market to buy either a 2010 ZR1 or a 2010 ZO6.
