ZR1 & Z06 Nurbergring Times
I was watching a show about supercars last night when they started to compare all of the Nurbergring times. That made me curious as to where the various Corvettes stood. I was quite surprised to see the C6 ZR1 was only 3 seconds faster than the C6 Z06 with the same tires and even the same driver. That's not much delta for a 7 minute track. Does anyone have any ideas about why the extra 100 HP didn't translate into more of a difference?

+200 pounds and more weight on the front tires is probably a good part of it. Weather, track temp, air temp all affect it. Possibly some traffic, too as it is frequently not a private test session, although I recall watching the ZR1 video and the track seemed clear of traffic.

When they tested both back in 2012 they didn't rent the track but did testing during manufacturers open days. They would get one traffic free lap at the end of the day to run a fast lap. Mero ran ZR1 first, he did a total of 2 clean laps on different days and ran the 7:19. They analyzed the data from the runs and figured he could knock a few seconds off that time but instead decided to run the Z06 since it hadn't run since 06. That is when he ran the 7:22. I believe some of that time was helped by Mero having a few open laps practice before running the Z06.

The ZR1 lapped the ring in 7:19.63 vs. 7:22.68 for the Z06. Were it not for the super long straights, the difference would have been considerably less than 3.05 seconds.
1 - [(7*60+19.63) / (7*60+22.68)] = 0.6% difference
What traffic?

^ ^ ^ that's a wicked video!! Thanks for posting!
So, that pretty much shows that between the Z06 and ZR1, it's pretty much a driver's race, if the SAME DRIVER can be within ~3 seconds on a 7-minute lap! Very cool .

What is the C6 Z weight difference between the Z07 and Z06 option for the same model year and same options?

Drivers race is pretty subjective as driver skill can make up for a lot on track, but with equal drivers the ZR1 is faster at almost any road course. The only track I ever saw the Z06 test a faster time was on the tight 1.4 mile Radical loop at Spring Mt. The tighter the track the closer the ZR1 and ZO6 are. I would definitely take the Z06 (Z07) over the ZR1 for an autocross though.

Mag suspension, larger tires and wheels, more aero appears to not be offset by the carbon rotors or carbon panels.
I guess I got them backward.
