Default My 06 Z06 build results

Finally got around to writing a post about my recent build. I purchased my 2006 Z06 last July. The car was completely stock with around 31k miles on the clock. Shortly after I bought it I replaced the rock hard stock runflats with a new set of MPSS tires. I also installed an MGW flat stick short throw shifter and a halltech MF103 intake. I had known about the LS7 valve guide issue prior to purchasing the car and planned on addressing them ASAP. After spending countless hours researching my options I ended up placing an order with AHP for a set of their package 4 heads. I had Kohle mill them .030" and install a set of PSI 1511 springs and Ti retainers. For the cam I went with a Katech K501. I was a little bit worried about the drivability with a cam of this size however my tunner did a great job and it drives just fine. Also installed Kooks 2" longtubes.

Baseline dyno with MF103 intake was 465rwhp/437rwtq. Final numbers are 558rwhp/495rwtq. I've had the car back for 2 weeks now and overall I'm very happy with the way it drives. Noticeable increase in power, especially on the top end. When it was stock the power seemed to taper off at the top of the RPM range, now it pulls hard all the way to redline. Traction is limited at WOT in the lower gears, I may have to look into getting a set of drag radials. Like I mentioned, drivablity is fine with only mild surging below 1300rpm in light load situations. Any recommendations on a clutch? Stocker is holding up well so far but I'm sure its days are limited. Here's a short clip of how it sounds after a cold start.

Very cool! I went with the same AHP head package and my results were almost identical.

That's an interesting valve spring for that cam. I know Katech points to them on their website when you look at their K501 webpage, but with .657"/.660" of lift I'm wondering what is ideal? Katech's website says their LS7 install height of the 1511 is 1.85" (assuming with their Ti retainers.)

On PSI's website's valve spring calculator, it says 1.850" at .660" lift on the LS 1511 ML will give you 111 lbs of seat pressure at 1.850" and 364 lbs @ 1.190" open pressure, with coil bind in a desirable .090" range.

LS 1511 ML: 130 lbs @ 1.800", 370 lbs @ 1.175"
LS 1515 ML: 140 lbs @ 1.950", 405 lbs @ 1.300"
LS 1516 ML: 150 lbs @ 1.800", 420 lbs @ 1.140"

Very nice Spesh..... How do you like the flat stick? Any pics? I ran that shifter in my C5Z and am considering one for my C6Z.... As far as clutch, you'll get all kinds of opinions. My choice was the Monster LT1-S.... Its awesome!! I have ran the Mcleod, the Mantic (ER2) in my C5Z... ER2 was not good w the Nitrous,, Mcleod was nice and held the power well.

Yes I'm using the stock intake manifold. I do plan on adding a ported MSD at some point.

I thought the same thing when researching what springs to use. What really convinced me was katech's spintron testing of the 1511ML that showed valvetrain stability to 7300 rpm. My installed height ended up being 1.83". I'm sure the 1515ML springs would work fine as well however katech still recommends using the 1511ML springs with the K501.

Overall I like the flat stick shifter. Its a little notchy but the throws are much shorter. Plus I think it looks pretty cool.

At least another 30 hp waiting for you there.

The 1515's weren't out when they did their initial testing. I wonder if they plan to ever test the 1515's, or if they already have. I believe they just typically take the stance of "why change what's already proven to work", but the additional testing would be great to see.

Very nice !!!!

I run almost the same exact setup, as does AZDave427 and a bunch others...Dave on ARH 2" and me on B&B 1 7/8th Both of us on ported MSD intakes and 102 tb's as well.

I recently had my original short block redone with forged pistons (matched to my WCCH .030 milled heads to bring static compression to 12.0:1 ), rings gapped for nitrous, K501 with PSI1511 springs (stock valves). I run on E85 (actually E54 here in AZ), with the aluminum flywheel/McCleod RXT1200 clutch setup.

With my new 3.90 rear gear setup, I'm hoping to close in on the 10.0 flat ET range (in AZ altitude)....... I currently trap anywhere from 131-136 depending on DA and air temps.
