Default Front splitter question

Hi Guys,

As you can see, the clip is causing the splitter to gap. Upon inspection, the clip actually broke a piece of the shell so the clip will no longer keep the splitter tight against the shell. I'm calling it a shell because I am not sure if it's part of the front bumper. Can someone confirm whether the splitter clips directly to the front bumper or can I get away with replacing a smaller piece? I guess I could just remove the clip and see if the splitter behaves itself once I get on the freeway. I would just hate to replace the whole bumper. I'm not sure whether the spot the clip goes could be repaired somehow. It's not visible so it wouldn't have to be pretty.

Thanks!

The splitter is attached to the bumper skin with screws through captured nuts.
That's what is visible there, probably ripped through the skin.
The damage and repairs possible should be visible after taking the lip off.
Youtube probably has a zillion DIYs.

Thanks. So it is attached directly to the bumper skin. I will search to see if there's a way to repair the bumper.

The solution is "fender washers" Have no fear. That's what they are for.

Wow. That is exactly what I need. I was already thinking of making my own. A whole lot better than paying for a new bumper.

When I had my accident I ripped the splitter off the nose leaving a bunch of enlarged holes where it connected to the nose. It couldnt be repaired and the nose needed replacing. That spot keeps the splitter up tight to the nose if the others are good you will still have a gap if you cant snug it up

If I can get a washer on the inside of the bumper (I'll have to get under there to know for sure) I should be able to snug it up real good. And only one spot is damaged.

Just keep in mind that once you install a larger washer, if your splitter hits something again, it could tear open an even bigger hole in the bumper cover. So go with the smallest washer needed to make the repair, and if it happens again you can then step up to a slightly larger size if needed.

I took my Z06 to a local Houston guy, well known on here, that specializes in Vettes. He was able to plastic weld in the locations the clips went when I decided to introduce my aftermarket splitter to an immovable object........ Did a great job.

Interesting. I was wondering about this type of solution, perhaps using an epoxy.

Plastic weld works perfect. Go to Home Depot and get a tube. It is pliable and you can mold the putty to shape then finish with a dremel or small file. I even used some touch up paint to blend in.

All fixed. I love it when I can fix something by using extra parts I have laying around. I will do the plastic fix once I have to replace the splitter. The part I used will give it some serious holding power.

I had a critter run out in front of my Z and the impact tore out two of my center clips. I simply drilled a hole through the splitter and bumper near the existing clip slots and used plastic push/pins to clip the splitter back to the bumper. Now if I happen to pull up to far and hit a curb when parking the push/pins pull out and I simply pull them out and reinstall them. I got the push/pins at Painters Supply (Auvecp Pak P/N 12567). It was a simple fix to a reoccurring problem.

I have now broken two carbon fiber splitters on my ZR1 in the past 15 months from road debris but yet to damage the front bumper fascia mounting points. Just installed my second Katech unit yesterday morning. Only 13 screws with integral washers to attach.

Those obviously cost a wee bit more than the plastic splitters on the C6 Z06.

Yeah, which is why I've often thought that if I were to add the ZR1 splitter to my C6Z...I think I'd start with a "practice" splitter first, before going high-end or OE. RPI sells an OE replica for $485, and I've never read a bad thing about quality, fit or finish from them. That would most likely be my first splitter to install. Destroying a $500 splitter, while it would certainly sting, is far better than a $1200 OE splitter. C7 Carbon is another good repro for about $450 I believe.
