Can surging be tuned out????
I did my HCI 2 years ago, car is still running great but lately the thing that's bugging me is the surging that it had since the work was done and now I'm getting kinda annoyed by it. I need to keep the engine revs around 1800-2000 rpm on the highway to not get surging, below that and it starts bucking and stuff
I'm contemplating another cam swap but before I do I would like to know if surging can be tuned out? My car is tuned obviously with the work I did but I'm not that happy with it, it runs great mind you but I think a different tune done by someone else might make the car run better possibly with a lot less surging but keeping my hp/torque # where they are now or higher.
The cam I'm running now is not big by any standards (VR Kaotik camshaft), I'm thinking if I do another cam swap I might need to go a tad milder and hopefully driveability will improve. What says you???

Tuning can help, but will not ever completely remove reversion induced issues you have off idle/lower rpm. I spent two years experimenting with dozens and dozens of different calibrations and tricks. Finally got tired of it and swapped out the cam for something with less overlap.
I'd try a different tuner before swapping cams though. My idea of good manners is probably different than yours.
If you have the tune file in HPT format, and it's not locked, I can always take a look at it for you and let you know if I think more work will help out or not. There are a few things that doesn't take much effort to say the calibration is crap or the tuner put a good effort into it.

Short answer is yes and no, all of the surge no, but a good tuner can get close. The guys with the technical know how are gonna want specifics on the cam. Posting the numbers from the cam card will help. LSA? Intake/exhaust duration? lift numbers? All those will numbers will help make a decision if “tuning it out” would accomplish your goals or get a new cam. Good luck man🇺🇸

Thanks guys, Michael_D it would be great if I can send the tune file for you to take a look at (please PM me your email addy), and I have to find my cam card for those that want to see all the info on the card for the cam.
I'll take a look and post back up with the info shortly.

Here's the cam card (note the lift #'s are with 1.7 rockers...……………….my lift with 1.8 rockers is 0.660")
:
I've been checking out Cam Motion's site and if I were to do a cam swap I was thinking of replacing the Kaotik with their stage 3 LS7 cam (assuming their cam will work with all my stuff already on the car) or custom grind again making sure the cam will work with my supporting parts.

Hope you all don't mind me tagging on here, but I literally came here to ask the same question. I've got the stock cam, but just did new heads to fix guide issues, headers, a cold air intake, and a tune, and now my car will not stop shaking violently below 2k rpm. I'll be watching this thread intently because this car is all but undriveable as it is.

Something in the tune got messed up??? With a stock cam it should just drive like factory even with head work, headers and a proper tune.

Should I make as new thread? I don't want to mess up yours.

Question. Do you have an aftermarket CAI? I recently had a halltech mf108 installed and it surged pretty bad. Had to put the radiator shroud back on due to turbulence.

Sox Fan. Just did exact same fix as you. Buy a new shroud and have it put back on. This will fix your issue. Direct air flow to filter causes it to throw lean codes and dump too much fuel.

No removing of bumper or radiator. I had the shop put it back on for me as he wanted to check and readjust tune if necessary as well. I can tell zero difference with shroud back on in power. It just doesn’t surge anymore. The ram air effect only gives you small gains at really high speeds. The gain isn’t worth the surging. I had heads ported and milled. Made pretty good numbers for stock cam and all stock exhaust. 512/448

make SURE all vacuum lines etc. are hooked up, my wife's car surged all the time and she said was the nature of the beast, I thought not ?? after head job was done the vacuum line for the PCV was not installed, just tucked under the outlet ???
