Default New SKF Racing Hubs turn rough

I have a set of nib skf racing hubs I got from a user here and am getting ready to put them on but they all turn a bit rough.

as if there was some dirt in them or something.

has anyone run into this? My search-fu isn’t turning anything up

Yes. SKF warns that their wheel bearings will feel rough when new and turned by hand due to some special grease they use. I installed four new (OE replacement, non-racing) SKF hubs and all four felt gritty when turned by hand. On the car, they were all fine.

I'd love to know what "special grease" they use. Hopefully someone will post up if they find out......

This is what they have to say for themselves:

Many technicians will inspect a replacement hub unit visually as well as by turning the assembly by hand. It is important to note that turning a hub bearing by hand is not a proper way to check its quality.

The SKF GHG grease contains many performance-enhancing additives, some of which are in the form of soft crystalline structures when the grease is new. When turning a new SKF premium hub bearing by hand, the rough course feeling is a result of these soft crystalline structures.

Even though the hub bearing may feel rough when initially rotated by hand, after rotating on the vehicle for a few minutes, the soft crystalline structures break down into finer structures, and the hub bearing rotates smoothly.

There is no detrimental effect of the SKF GHG grease run-in. This is normal for high-performance grease.

It seems to be true. My new SKF bearings did feel rough out of the box, but they're working fine after installation.
