Default L88. Am I the only one?

This new Z should have been marketed as an "L88 427"
L88 badge on the side of the fender with a 427 over top where it said 405 horse on the ZO6 badge.
That would have been my choice if I were at GM.

What do you think?

I would like that for the Z and ZL1 for the Z06R or blue devil.

Sounds right. Maybe they are saving it for something else

Default That's Okay Except it's not an L88

That's okay except it's not an L88.
I'm not sure true L88 owners would agree with a badge on the new model now defining their cars.

Maybe it could be justified if the Z06 was being offered with a delete option list like the original, to leave out the unnecessary comfort items, heater, choke, fan shroud, radio.

I could care less what badge it wears. I care about what's under the hood. Kind of like judging a book by its cover.

The general public doesn't know what an L88 is, hell I barely do, but they do know what a Z06 is.

In case you guys are not aware, in 1970 there was a planned LS7 option that was a cast iron head 454 with all the L-88 goodies including the cam.

The LS7 and LS6 were never released for Corvette in 1970, but the 450 HP LS6 did make it into some Chevelles.

The LS6, in low compression form, was released for Corvette in 1971. LS7 never made it as a factory installed engine, but long blocks and all the bits and pieces were available OTC for a number of years.

I think ZL1 makes more sense than L-88, it being an all aluminum 427 and all.
But I'm fine with what they are doing with the nomenclature.

L88 has always been merely an engine code. Z06 on the other hand, has always meant a performance package. The ZR1 is referred to by its' performance RPO, not by the LT5 which powered it. A Z code of some sort seems more appropriate since there's a lot more to the car than the engine.

I am curious as to why they market it as a 7.0L rather than a 427. Seems like they are missing the boat on that. Probably to avoid some lawsuit because it doesn't exactly measure out - who knows...

As a Z06 owner, I'm pleased that they stuck with the name.

Except for the fact that the L88 was a big block 427 and this is a small block 427. They are totally different engines.

Well, for those who want to pick some more, the 70 LT1 has no real resemblence to the 92 LT1 other than bore and stroke, the LS6 is a 70's big block, and also a present small block, the 63 Z06 didn't have disc brakes, but the new one doesn't offer a bigger fuel tank. After a while it all gets kind of stupid

In 1971 you could get a ZR2 Corvette. Now you can get a late model S10 with the ZR2 package.

Personally, I like the Z06 name. In the past 4 years, the Z06 name has become synonymous with racing and high performance. I'm glad they left the name alone.

Bingo. If they make a new big block for the Corvette, then we'll talk L-88 or ZL-1. The 427 badge, however is a good idea. Anyone who knows anything about old school performance would recognize that.

It makes more sense to use 427 as a branding badge rather than putting 7.0L somewhere on the car. If they decide on putting 7.0L it will bring up visions of the mid sixties Fords with the Ford 427.

I was thinking since most Vette people love the history....
...That L88 is the hi dollar top performer and highly sought after Vette.
It is aluminum and it is a 427 (Thank God)
Big Or Small block the cubes are there...just in a much better package.

I think most know L88 before ZL-1 (think Camaro had a ZL-1 also)

GM kinda did it with the current "LS" engine like the old LS6 and such.
My point being that everyone compares it to the old ZO6 and it couldn't be more different.

I think the price would be more acceptable to digest if it was not badged as a ZO6 and everyone blasting the "price Increase"
It's not a price increase it's a completly new model.

Why saddle a modern, higher horsepower, more fuel effecient engine with a name the reminds people of low power, poor fuel effeciency and heavy weight?

It's evolution of a famed performer.....
Still light weight, still a hi performer, still the king.
Crap...should they change the Corvette name too since the old ones are out dated technically, dont handle and eat fuel....
Additionally those that can spend the hi dollars are most likely old enough to remember seeing that Nasty Vette as a kid with a stinger hood, side pipes and awesome rumble.

Ah....maybee I spent too much time in marketing class.

I wish they had brought back the "Stingray" name...
