No way to know what will be collectible 40 to 45 years from now. The current Z06 has the cred (at the top of the high performance pile and used hard by enthusiasts) to become collectible but it was built in a large volume so a fair number of the cars will have to modified, or sent to the bone yard to get the volume down so the prices rise. As with the current crop of collectible cars nobody will care whether one has been totaled and rebuilt since most of the ones running will have been rebuilt to the way they supposedly left the factory with all of the correct bolt heads and crayon marks on the frame and body.

One thing that could make it more collectible is if we go into a period like we had from 72 through 84 where there just weren't any high performance cars produced that could compete with the cars from the late 60s. However, if things keep going the way they are now 20 years from now the new family grocery getters will outperform Z06s from this era.

Current owners of the cars will never see the value rise much unless they are fairly young and can wait the requisite number of years. If you buy now and sell in 25 or less years the car will depreciate.

No it isn't if you only look at 2012 MY numbers. But the Z06 has been in production since the 06 MY. You have to look at the total numbers of Z06's produced, not just one MY. Latest numbers I can find are 27,523 Z06's produced through MY 2012. A bit bigger numbers and not quite as rare as you might think.

If you have any interest in collectability, you should not be thinking of a Z. Look at the 1990s ZR 1.

If the 427 isnt ever gonna be produced again that will keep are current Z06's at bay for a while meaning price stays steady around the 35 to 50thousand mark. If they make like a 454 small block it will hurt us then. As long as they stay smaller it keeps are 427s at a good buck. Thats all i can say truthfully.

I do question how much of a market there will be in ~20 years for any 100% gas powered car. What will gas be going for?

Without even factoring in the inflation rate, they are still worth less than what he paid for them 27 years ago.
One thing I learned from collecting various things, starting out with NASCAR Die Casts, once people identify said item as a possible collectors item it never appreciates as much as the unique items that started the trend.

The market will bottom out on C6 Z06s in 10-15 years, and in another 5-10 they may begin to gain ground. I highly doubt hanging on to a C6 Z06 will a good investment over 25 years. ZR-1s dropped but from 2002 to 2006 they seemed to gain some ground (not much) before the economy tanked.

The low production numbers for Z06 is probably one reason they created another way of getting rid of LS7 engines with the convert GS. Another tell that we are likely never to see another 427 engine!

The Z06 will be more difficult to find from model years 2010-2013....(I'm guessing the 2013 will be low production as well d/t the 427 Vert).

The vast majority will be 2006-2009. After '09 there is less than 2k over three model years.

Did you count 2010 in your numbers above? (518 2010's)

The Zr1 and Grandsport didn't help Z06 production. It would be interesting to see total C6 production by year as well as the various widebody options.
