I am installing a vaccum gauge on my car, and I am wondering how the electronic ones function. Where is the boost pressure read from? I understand that the MAF can only read up to atmospheric pressure. This also makes me wonder, how some devices such as the "diablo predator" read boost from the PCM.
The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) reads the vacuum on the manifold and inputs the signal back to the computer. You are correct, it only reads up to 1 Atm or 14.7 psi absolute or outside pressure. For boost applications, you really need to replace the 1 bar MAP with a 2 or 3 bar MAP and retune the computer with software like HP Tuner.
