Default Technical TT question

I noticed that the TT Z06 kits are venting the wastgated pressure back to the exhaust for quiter operation, what happens if you dont vent it back to the exhaust.

You're obviously getting louder, but in what sense, do you get a louder turbo (boost) sound? Basically how is that "louder" gonna sound like? I want it to be obvious that the car is TT'oed

Ive checked out a few APS TT vids, and also checked out Vindication's TTi vids, and TTi vids seems to have a louder turbo/ BOV set-up are the Garrets quiter than the Turbonetics or is it a camera mic placement/recording issue?

I know both kits use different turbos and that makes a big difference, but again back to the main question.

The waste gates are always vented back to the exhaust, the only serve to have the exhaust bypass the turbine blades so they won't spin any faster when the maximum amount of boost is reached. I've never seen them vented to the atmosphere, or into a separate pipe from the exhaust. It is true that on the APS Z06 kit, they are external to the turbchargers, and on the regular C6 they are built into the turbo exhaust housing.

You may have them confused with the Blow Off Valves which are often vented to the atmosphere, but those are on the intake side, and are activated when the turbos are spun up, and you let off the gas. They help keep you from bending the throttle plate among other things. The BOV's on the APS kit are not vented to the atmosphere and are very quiet. I can't hear them from inside my car. I have the standard C6 kit.

A wastegate only opens when you reach full boost. If you run an open wastegate, when you get to full boost it will sound almost like running open exhaust on a naturally aspirated setup. Which is quite loud but doesnt really have any turbo whistle or turbo sound to it.

That is incorrect. Alot of imports run open wastegates. I ran an open wastegate on my big turbo RX7. As a matter of fact, my friend got a STS single turbo kit for his GTO and it runs an open wastegate.

Blow Off Valves(BOV) vent to atmosphere. Bypass valves are recirculated back into the intake track. They accomplish the same objective, the main reason being, is to relieve the strain off the turbo(s) when the throttle plate is close. When making boost and the throttle is closed, the pressure has no where to go and will actually head back to the turbo and stop the compressor wheel while engine exhaust is still driving the turbine wheel causing stress and flex in the shaft usually resulting in wheel-to-housing contact and damage.

use a greddy BOV. They are about the most "Look at Me" BOV you will find on the market.

not using a X pipe or catback will help too.

Yes, dumping the gates to atmosphere just sounds like a loud rushing air noise. Sounds rather annoying in my opinion.

I've replaced the standard APS BOV's on my kit with HKS's. I too wanted a little sound to go along with the car. I like it, what can I say It's not too crazy, but just enough to let you know it's there.

I'm hoping my car will be finished and broke in by next weekend. I'll shoot some video inside the car once I'm allowed to get into boost.
