Without seeing any of them looks like you should def check pulley for damage and yea that def weakened or trashed that belt..

Dunno y but that pulley looks protruding and off alignment out too much but could be angle of pic. I agree with neutron def looks cockeyed

Yep, you guys are right.. it's more obvious in person, but the power steering pump shaft looks like it's pointing the wrong way.. I'm not sure if the bearing in the power steering pump fell apart or what yet.. There was a big puddle of power steering fluid under the car, so I expect whatever failed will be pretty obvious once I get some stuff out of the way

It's pointing more "up" than it should be.. which is making the pulley all sideways. The bottom of the pulley is going towards the front of the car and the top of the pulley is going towards the rear of the car

I'll probably pull it apart some tomorrow after work.. I want to at least get parts ordered so I'm not waiting around another week or two waiting on them

Nope, didn't touch anything near it. Just a weird coincidence I guess. I'm just glad I turned around and didn't keep heading towards home.. The noise got horrible about 20 ft from where I usually park the car at my parents.. so I cut the engine and barely rolled it in

The only thing near the front of the car that I even touched were the spark plugs.. other than that it was only bell housing and back

I know people are running this setup without problems, but it looks like a case of too much pressure on the accessories from the blower tensioner. It's ridiculous how strong that thing has to be. I really wish Paxton would allow us to use cog belts without voiding the warranty. It would be much easier on the accessories and there would be no belt slip.

It is def. a lot of force on the accessories to run a regular style belt. Cogs seem to have their own set of problems, but I know very little about them really

It will be interesting to see what actually broke though.. With the whole shaft being crooked I can only guess it's broke pretty good

I can't even explain how happy I was that it was this and not something in the drivetrain though. I was freaking out at first.

I imagine so. At least the power steering pump is easy to change and not too expensive. The bearing inside must have come apart for the shaft to be crooked like that.

I think so too... I don't know how else it'd be angled like that unless the bearing came apart, or the pump just came loose or something.. but the puddle of power steering fluid under the car makes me think something is pretty well busted or broke or something.

I'm going to replace the high pressure hose from the pump to the rack also. The older cars came with a really short version that makes it a bastard to get things back together.. The new one is a lot longer and offers plenty of room to work, so I think it will be worth the $60 or so.

I guess I'm going to break down and buy a "new" pump and not a rebuilt one this time. Gah.

Is it possible to add a filter to the power steering system? Seems it would be a good idea to get any metal shavings, etc. out. That may be why I destroyed a new pump so quick.

I installed this one in April of this year.

I've never seen a filter on a ps setup but I don't see why you couldn't put one on there. Wish there was a good way to flush the rack like you can a trans cooler.

My BMW had a filter built into the reservoir and constantly cycled the fluid through it. I guess GM isn't quite that fancy though

I'll research it some more tonight

I've seen those. I thought you were talking about an external filter. I wonder if you could use an inline tranny filter.

Nah, unfortunately I didn't have time to mess with it today. The car is down at my parents house so I'm hoping I can run by there tomorrow after work and tear it down real quick.

Amazon prime has new GM power steering pumps w/free 2 day shipping, so I'll probably order one tomorrow. Already ordered replacement hose and pulley. Guess I'll replace the belt while it's apart.

Hey might be a good time to throw on a 3.25" pulley

edit: of course the weather forecast for tomorrow sucks.. so it may be Wednesday before I can tear into it. Sad face.

I was hoping I could add an external filter..but it would have been really nice if GM included one in the reservoir. I found a few external ones online but need to do more reading about them

I think they're basically just transmission filters like you mentioned..

Anybody know if I need a different size belt if going from a 3.5" to 3.25" pulley?

Mine has an 89.5" on it now

I came across this on Amazon earlier for a power steering filter..

I bet I could install it where the power steering cooler used to be (removed it during SC install). Can't be a bad idea considering I've had two power steering pumps fail..

No need for a cog belt to relieve stress on accessories. Just get a direct drive setup. Problem solved.

If I didn't just sell my backup one last week to Joe@CPR I would have given you a crazy good deal on it. Got 2 complete DD kits now laying around the house because I like DDs.
