What's your take on causing this damage to the belt?

Make sure the ring on your harmonic balancer did not come loose from the rubber making the pulley to walk causing misalignment.

Those pictures are what made my decision to have an ATI balancer installed during my build. It may not be his problem but it is something to check before installing another belt.

Don't blame you there. I went with a cheaper option from trickflow/summit
