Default Let's talk about head(s)

I'm slowly gathering parts to finally build my car and get some money for the stock stuff before it does actually let go. Been over 5 years with great luck now.

Ok so what I have now is:
Callies Dragonslayer 3.625 stroke
Callies Ultra H rods
Custom anodized Diamond Pistons 4.125 bore

Plan for a block is the Dart LS Next Iron. Gonna grab a Mantic triple while I'm at it also. Current cam will change for new setup and I'll have a D1X since I already sold my D1SC. Compression will be over 11 since I'm flex fuel and really only use e85 anyway.

My head is literally spinning thinking about what heads to get. Considering the HIP'd TFS 245s from Tooley but I'll need to change intakes and I'm not doing sheet metal or anything fancy, PRC285s but once again would need to change intakes, grab some pricey Mast heads, or go with the Dart Pro 1 LS3's. Tooley and Bewley swear by the HIP'd TFS 245s and my builder has seen good results from the new Darts and like TFS also. The PRCs I'm iffy on and Mast is higher price wise than I want to go that's why I didn't even mention All Pro or Brodix.

I just need a little clarity and more help since this a big decision and I only want to do it once. As of now I spin the setup to 6900 and will probably bump it to 7300ish but it's all about having a efficient setup to me. Not looking to make a whole lot more power as I really didn't want to do this at all but rather do it now than later.

Thanks for the help.

with that motor combo, sounds like you need to go F1X.

Well I've seen three sets of the Darts crack and destroy a motor. They were in disbelief but slapped on a set of TFS 245's and haven't had another issue. But that was on a race car, but would make me hesitant to invest in those. TFS is an option, just not for me any more, but that's personal. I do have extreme faith in the Mast heads, but they are a little more money than most. The PRC's have done well on quite a few setup's although I've only used them once, are pretty cheap for what they offer, and seem to be working well. GL!

TFS 245s, or if budget really stretch, I wouldn't rule out LS9/A heads.

LS9s are an option also. I think I'm leaning towards the trick flows but want to get all the info I can.

No interest in a F1X or it's powerband for my streetcar. My D1SC was perfect but couldn't pass up this situation.

If Bewley and Tooley are saying TFS 245s, that what I would do. They both know their ****.

I wouldn't do PRCs. Mast or All Pro if you want full out baller status and drop $5k+ on heads.

first off Brodix heads are cheaper than mast.. You can get loaded Titanium/inconel Brodix 273's for under $4000 and they are amazing heads. With that said I run Mast 285's. Nothing wrong with the PRC 285s either, good head at a great price. As mentioned above the LS9 heads are great option as well. The blower you are using won't make enough power to need a 6 bolt head. You can buy GMPP CNC'd LS9 heads for $1600 a pair with Ti intake valves, they are a steal for what they are.

I already have an idea of how much it can make without a smaller pulley. I feel better going with a 6 bolt head while it's all being done.

If I make the switch to cathedral then I need to figure out what intake to use.

I've got some recommendations for LSX-LS7, LSX-LS9, AFR LS3, Mast 305, TFS235,and AI LS3 as well.

LSX-LS7 is nearly impossible to get ahold of, unless supply has recently changed they were on habitual back order for 6 months.

LSX-LS9 is a good option but I would change the exhaust valves to a solid or Inconel and the springs will need to be changed. I would also take the Ti valves out and hit the stems with some 1600 grit sand paper and then a buffing wheel to smooth out the coating they put on them.

I wouldn't touch the AFR LS3 heads.

Id run the Mast 285's over the 305's, I had to choose between these two last year when I bought heads and after some conversations with guys that are far smarter than I am the 285 was decided to be a better overall head. The 305 runs a even larger intake valve and the gains are not worth the additional mass, that was a consensus.

Im out on the TFS and AI heads completely.

Just my $.02, its your money though. Mast 285's or Brodix STS 273's would be my first two choices

awesome! can't wait to see the before/after of the D1 setup and the D1x. I've also considered selling my old D1SC and swapping in the D1x to try and get a bit more top end.

I'm going to guess >950whp for this new setup?

I got a good deal so I ended up with MAST 305 heads with all the fancy valve train stuff (inconel etc) and they've been great so far and car makes good power for me at least. Very reliable so far.

I have some results just can't say specifics yet. I will say it will make more than 950 easily

NICE. just looking at the basic numbers seems like d1x should be worth ~70whp over a D1SC fairly easily. would be awesome to see you break 1k whp!

especially interested to see how the relative torque curves look and where it peaks at on your setup relative to the d1sc.

I have all the info just waiting on the green light to post it. It's a badass "little" blower. With the new setup and higher comp this blower will easily make over 1000 and I had zero interest in that haha.

For an LS3 port on a 4.125 bore my two choices would be Mamo TFS or the Brodix BR3-7 from WCCH

I've been looking up the BR3's and they look promising. I will be having Larry Meaux touch up any set of heads I buy.

The 2 NA cars I have drove with Mast heads were impressive.I Doubt you could go wrong with Tooleys sugestions though and it's cheaper.

Frankenstein has some "Chinese" Mast LS3 heads that suppose to flow a little over 400cfm. They look very much like the Mast heads (actually even thinker deck, probably not the same material though) and cost a little less than 3k including springs and stainless steel valves. I just had them installed on my car and made 1050rwhp on 20psi (Ysi/stock cube ls3 build).
I can't claim anything about these heads because I only had them installed for a short time but so far they are doing great. I don't think there are many cars with these heads right now but I was told a few people made over 1300rwhp on them with no issue.

Just something you might consider. If you call Frankenstein they will give you more information about them.

Look into the BR3-7. It uses LS7 rockers so you can take advantage of the 1.8 ratio and head flow around .650 lift.

He's making a new intake manifold now he's been posting about on ls1tech.
