Disappointing day at the track
A few months ago I went to a Wanna Go Fast event. I have a GS Vert with a 650 Hennessy Package, stock 6 speed and Quartermaine Clutch. I've only had the car a year and I have Dynos from the previous owner of around 550 RWHP.
Trying multiple 1/2mile runs I was only able to reach 140MPH.
My question is would this be the normal speed I would achieve for a 1/2 mile run?
Is something wrong with the car?
Or do my driving skills suck that bad?.
One of my thoughts were could I be shifting at the wrong RPM. If I remember correctly I was shifting right before redline.
I was checking the last Dyno sheet and it looked like HP peaked at 5.5K
Should that be where I should have shifted and would it effect my speed that much.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Drifting
shifting doesn't usually play a huge part in these longer distances. But the first three gears I would shift sooner like just past your peak power say 6k and when in fourth just ride it out til redline or the end of the run. GL!

I would have guessed 145-150mph maybe but every day is different. the better way is to compare it to similar cars that ran on that day at the same event.
5500rpm shifting seems way too low. I would be shocked if your car is not making power at 6300-6400rpm so I'd shift just past that.

I was low 140's before going to e85, long tubes and more timing. Probably in the ballpark of you rwhp wise.
After adding those I went 163
Shifting at 5500 would be a bad idea, basically changing gears at the worst spot
Which location was it? How hot? Are you running meth? Tune could have been pulling a ton of timing once it was hot

I was in Indiana in Oct between 70 -75. I do have long tubes and no meth or e85. I'm very interested in seeing what's the cost in running meth or e85.

Meth is around $600 for kit plus install and tune updates if so desired

I just did a 1/2 mile event and everyone was doing different pulls. 30 roll, 40 roll, 60 roll. Some guys even started from a dead stop at 1/8 mile before the start cones. My question to you, what did you do at the beginning cones?
My best pass was 158 from a 40 roll. There are so many variables.

I've always started from dead stop at start line

Dead stop. Didn't know you had the option.

I think every one of these events is different. Even the Shift Sector airstrip attack events I've done have varied over the years. They used to do a ~40 roll at the cones, which were a 1/2 mile from the speed trap. I did about 165 mph like this in a C6 with 720 WHP or so. Now the events are mostly done from a dead stop, with the starting line being the beginning of the 1/2 mile. So that's going to result in lower speeds. I did about 153 mph with ~600 WHP in my GS at the last event. Heat soak was an issue though due to the nature of the event.
like was mentioned, the key is looking at what other cars are trapping. I was running faster than a tune/pulley ZR1, so I felt like I was right where I should be.

Yeah it seems to be a bit all over the place. I imagine it will get at least a little more standardized as 1/2 mile racing gets more popular. Or I hope it does anyways. Hard to compare much when one event starts from 40mph and another is starting at 0

The roll thing is even more whacky because they tell people to start at 40, but some people are starting at 100, or 80. Or backing up all the way and doing a 2/3 mile run and claiming crazy 1/2 mile stuff.

Yeah that's a bit crazy, at the last one I was at they had cones you could use for roll racing someone if you wanted to but it ended up being like a 3/8 mile run from the cones, not a 1/2 mile plus room to get up to 40 or whatever
2/3 mile run had to put up some pretty crazy speeds

I think some people have given you some good advice. You should be going faster. My stock 11 GS A6 went 140 in the half mile.

But the best thing was, I had a great time, no one was hurt, and my car did not break down.
