I believe the consensus is that is is a good idea to clean off old head gasket.
Are you asking about ways to clean it?

Yeah kind of vague. Depends on the year but most of the newer ones don't require a ton of work to get clean I usually run a razor blade across to remove the rest of the silicone left behind. I don't use any real pressure and then brake clean or lacquer thinner to wipe it off. If luck would have it and its had a set of graphite gaskets I do the same procedure, its just a lot more work. I NEVER use the sanding disk that I've seen some ppl use. GL!

Elbow grease with a razor/plastic scraper, and a cleaner.

I wouldn't let a scotch bright or any abrasive touch the surface.

Razor and brake cleaner and a lot of elbow grease
I would not let scotch brite anywhere near it
