I would be alot happier with this car if I performed all my own maintenance. The service manual however points constantly to the "scan tool". For example page 8-382 step 2, install a scan tool, with the scan tool observe the fuel level sensor left tank parameter. And as I browse through the books, looking at things that I did repair on my c4 it more often than not refers to checking the scan tool parameters. There is even an "oil pressure" parameter (pg. 8-388) I am not at all interested in boosting the hp, I have 400 and would actually be happy with half that. But I don't like to drop the car off at the dealers to see if they can fix it, as I have'nt actually had alot of luck in that area. I see these tech 2's cost at least $3000. What is available to check and monitor these parameters, to see what is going on ? Would a cheap scanner observe these parameters, would one of the race tuners?

As far as I know, the tech II is unique in its capabilites as it can monitor and , or reset ,and or simulate functions and tests. However there are affordable alternatives with basic cabilites, Auto Xray , Predator, either of these would be useful and helpful. If you get to a point where you need a tech II , then the dealer can help you.
the tech 2 requires an annual subscription fee. This I believe covers updates. If one chose to go without the updates, would you still have to pay the annual subscription fee? Or failing to pay the annual fee would you be turned off, like a shareware program you did'nt pay for? To maintain an '06, if one waited another year it seems with the car operating okay further updates would'nt be really needed to maintain the one car. On the other hand the cost is just under $4000, which seems extremely steep for the owner. And then if you pile a subscription fee on top, it gets way out of hand.
