Default C6 Z51 on track performance vs. competitors

Was flipping through the new R&T last night and saw that out of the cars in their new comparison test (including the 911S, Boxster S and mighty Viper SRT10) that the C6 ran the best time around Buttonwillow. I was surprised especially that it bettered the Viper given the Viper's amazing magazine benchmarks, 0-60, 1/4 and lateral g's.

I looked at www.track-challenge.com and saw that the SRT-10's time around the Nurburgring is BARELY better than a C5 Z51 (8:18) despite all its apparent advantages and that it is WAY slower than the C5 Z06 and C6 Z51 (Viper 8:13, C5 Z06 7:56, C6 Z51 around 8 flat?).

Dodge should be ashamed. The new Viper's on track performance is pathetic. The new Z will spank this thing like nobody's business.

What you say is true, but how many folks do you know that actually track their cars in this fashion in a full on competition manner. I have owned and driven vette's since 1972, I belong to a club with over 160 members and I only know one real person that tracks his car that way. Most of the time it's tracked at the local track in quarter mile increments. And that's where the Viper shines.

Since the C4 came out the vette has been about "balance" and great handling but out on the street it's 1/4 times that get bragged about not lap times on a track in Germany.

Here's the link quoting Dave Hill saying the Z ran a 7:56. If you type in "z06 nurburgring 7:56" you'll see that it's well documented and matches the 360 CS and 911 Turbo. Pretty good company.

As for AFVETTE's comments, your point is well taken. I have only tracked my car several times in the 4+ years I've had it. Over time, what has really given me personally the most pleasure out of the car is the all around performance, the handling AND the acceleration. I really don't understand the drag-race-your-vette mentality. If the only thing I wanted to do was go fast in a straight line, I'd hop up an old 5.0 or something, not drop 70 or 80K on a Viper.

How much better was the C6 Z51 lap time this time against the 997S?

Usually the difference in the Mags tests is about .5 seconds in favor of the C6......

Does it really matter? All things are being compared equally here in terms of drivers and same "suspension adjustments" (or lack thereof). I've yet to see a driver turn a better time on a road course in an SRT-10 than a Z06 or C6 Z51. That includes Buttonwillow, Gingerman, Nurburgring and Hockenheim. Dunno about Road Atlanta. You have an 02 Z and an SRT10. I don't. Why don't you take them to a track and see which one you run a better time with? Or you could have your wife drive the Z and see how much she beats you by.

What year will the C6 Z06 be made available in a drop top model?
It doesn't need to. Apparently the base C6 with Z51 could beat the SRT-10. Why pull out the Z?

Look, man, I don't hate Vipers. They're obviously more exotic, exclusive and the Gen III's are better looking than any Vette, IMO. And they're faster in a straight line and the SRT10's brake better. They just apparently don't do better on most road courses.

Your last statement is just not reality based but the rest looks good.
