I've been installing stereos for more than 17 years now. I know that driving the car around the block to fix a head unit is not necessary let alone drive it for 22 miles Skatemic is doing the right thing by writing his concerns to the dealership and to the CF members.

Hey Red! You said you are a real engineer. It must be a lot of fun driving those great big trains every day. Where did you learn to talk so much yet say so little?

Yeah, I know the trains are awesome... but all that differential math, just to drive a train? Go figure. At least they give you that really cool stripped hat to wear. The talk lots, say little is a result of too much time working for the US Gov't... it's your gov't, so it's partially your fault ;-)

I also live in the NorCal Area (San Jose). Being in this area, Courtesy Chevy is hands down the largest chevy dealership. I've taken all my cars there for service (96, 97, 98 Camaros), and have never had any complaints. However, It is very unlikely I will ever take my 05 vette there even while it's under warranty, and absolutely impossible once it's out of warranty. Here's why.

About 2 years ago my '98 Z28 ran into an overheating problem. It would start off fine, but after about 5 minutes the needle would be dangerously close to pegging the red. I had suspected the thermometer and was thinking about replacing the stock one with a 160 deg thermometer I had bought a while back. However, my work schedule was pretty hectic and I just needed the problem resolved as quickly as possible since this car was my daily driver. I take my car into Courtesy and everything goes off without a hitch in the drop off. Everyone was polite and friendly. I get a call toward the later part of the day from Carl Weathers (service manager of some kind I believe). He tells me that the car has been looked over, and nothing could be found in the radiator to determine the overheating problem. His only recommendation at this point was to had the motor removed to look for a busted head gasket or a crack in the block. I asked for a price quote on this and he ballparked it near, but below 2000. This is a huge amount of money, so I took the car to an independent repair shop for a 2nd opinion.

It took them just under a few hours to figure out that my thermometer was indeed the problem (it had been jammed closed, so not enough coolant was flowing). Total cost to me was about 80 bux for parts and labor.

Now I'm not sure if it was sheer incompetence on courtesy's part, or were they trying to rip me off big time. I would figure that in this type of situation, before you recommend to a customer to rip out their motor and dismantle it, you'd check the thermometer.

Either way, the entire incident left a very bad taste in my mouth and I have never been back there since. I understand that this was a one time bad experience. However, the magnitude of incompetence in this case is alarming enough so I felt I should share it for those who may want to take it into consideration.

So what you are saying is that it is not only Corvettes that he thrashes while working for your dealership.
