Yes, the whole system is designed to enable the engine to run at relatively high temperatures. The oil gets thinner and has lower pumping losses, therefore better fuel economy. Basically, as long as you don't start loosing coolant, the engine will withstand quite high temperatures "with moderate operating parameters"*
[*] don't try running the engine on a race track at 230 dF water and 285dF oil temps for very long.
