I found this QTEC option that might be a good solution for getting a great exhaust note, at a better price.
QTEC stands for Quick Time Electric Cutout. An electrically controlled valve that bolts to standard cutouts and can open and close from inside the car. It controls the volume and adjusts the exhaust flow.
Anyone have any experience/opinion on this instead of a new exhaust system?
I've had a QTEC on my TA for a couple of years now. It is nice to be able to 'open it up' whenever you want more sound (cruising around town) and close it for freeway driving.
As far as power goes, it'll gain as much or more than any catback...since you are pretty much dumping before the mufflers.

I assume you're talking about a valve in the exhaust system, and not the "exhaust valve".
If you're talking about the former, check out this link in the Z06 section (which includes a good picture): Valve in Exhaust Tip
There are several threads in the Z06 section about this setup on the Z06, Porsche, Ferrari, VW, etc.
I had the dual setup on my SS and absolutly hated it. it always leaked and the wax type motor that opens and closes the valve melted off replaced them very quickly with custom exhaust
