Default Oil change question

Hey guys I wanted to ask a question about the first oil change. I recieved my first oil change at 3057 miles and right now the car is at 5350 miles but the DIC says that the cars oil percentage is at 72%. This seems kind of weird to me because I drive it around like an old man, once in a blue moon I'll open her up a bit to see if I still got 400 horsepower LOL. It would be great to here your opinions on this matter.

Oh yeah I'm under my miles by 650

Thanks in Advance

I plan on changing mine every 3000 miles regardless of what the DIC says. An oil change is the single best thing you can do for your cars longevity. After spending nearly $60K, what's $50 for an oil change?

Did you reset on the DIC? When you get your oil changed you have to reset it manually.

You paid how much for your car? OIL IS CHEAP! motors aren't. Change it every 3000 miles. Don't worry what the DIC says.

I go by the computer and change as per it's recommendation and I drive 50k miles per year. My 02 had 90 K and it didn't take a quart between changes at 12K plus miles. 3000 mile changes where valid in the 50's and now they have madication for the paranoia. Also you have a better chance of a bad can of oil than anything you think you will prevent.

The 3000 crowd...It's not what you payed for the car it is how much money you are foolishly throwing away doing needless oil changes...by your logic why don't you change it after every time you drive the car??

yep - agree.
Just the old dog with a new trick. No offense meant. It's just hard to let go of old traditions, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that says you're wrong. Meaning-- the Chevy engineers went to GREAT lengths to tell you exactly when to change you oil, by monitoring your mileage and driving habits with a computer, and telling you when to change it .

When the guy who built the car tells you when to change the oil, you probably, one of these days, should learn to believe him.

Let go, Luke ... the force will guide you ...

Release yourselves from the paranoia -- this irrational fear was only ever promoted by Jiffy Lube. Don't you think there's a bit of a conflict of interest there?

No engine manufacturer I'm familiar with has ever suggested every 3000 mile changes. Check your owners manual -- no car I've ever had has suggested that. Honda, Mistu, Chevy, Pontiac. Most suggest 7500 miles.

To me the expense is not the issue. And if you're paying $50 for a change, you're really getting ripped. The real issue is all the wasted oil going into the environment. If you really don't care about science, don't care about what the engine manufacturer tells you, don't trust computers (they're all put there by Big Brother to spy on us), then I'd say you better just change the oil before every drive, like the post above mentioned.

Just me spouting off. Didn't get my donut tonight, so I'm grumpy.

What about if you enjoy changing your oil? I kinda like it, it soothes me. Maybe I am just a little paranoid but it can't hurt... Also, they recycle oil now a days, not like back in the 50's.

Also, if you are worried about spending $30 every 3000 miles on your car, maybe you should have bought a cheaper car....

If you paid your money for the car, you ought to at least listen to what the designer tells you about it. Going to have surgery if the doctor says not needed ?

Follow your DIC Change when it gets to 25% if it makes you feel better

The two sides to this issues are both wrong. Chevrolet has the oil change interval set so that they can sell you a new car in the not too distant future (dont' ya think!). On the other hand, wasting money by changing every 3,000 with synthetics is just, well, wasting money. Pick a happy medium, like when the DIC says 50% left or every 7500 miles, whichever comes first. When cars were being changed every 3K miles, the car was turning somewhere around 2800RPMS at 60MPH. Today, they turn 1600 at 60mph so your engine isn't getting as much use in 3K miles as it did 20 years ago. Heat, is better controlled, additives are better, synthetics made a big difference, etc. etc.. Just don't take GM's thinking as gospel!

I think the DIC takes into consideration such things as the number of starts, rpms, miles driven, etc. So if it's smart enough to consider all of those algorithms and come to a conclusion, then I'm not going to argue with it. I change the oil in my C5 when the DIC gets to about 20% (usually around 5500 miles) and will do the same on my 06 C6.

Lets see, compare a $30 oil change to a $1000 set of tires... good analogy...

... well... interesting thread. I just sold my 2000 with 130,000km, changed oil according to DIC. Never did I see the oil drop on the dip stick, was never really dirty, and sold the car with a tight well running engine. The key here is to always change the filter!

I agree about the designers!

I was wondering also and asked same question .. then started to use my own noodle:

1. The oil filters are much, much better now
2. The oils (especially Mobil1) are much, much better
3. The engine machining, design, and manufacturing is much better

I'm going to go by the DIC or 7k ...
