Default Need help with exhaust mod. Pictures inside now.

I can’t afford a Corsa right now so I had a thought. I have 2 extra sets of stock exhaust that I got from a dealer free. What I am wondering is if I can just make my own system to be pretty close in sound to a Corsa or something?

Is the nice Corsa sound produced by the tip shape or is there something inside the muffler that is different?

I have the equipment to cut the mufflers and weld them back up so it would not be noticeable from the back of the car.

Any ideas or thoughts on how to proceed on this? I don’t want a real loud car but the stock exhaust is just too weak for a Vette!

Thanks

just guessing but..... chances are the corsa (or even most other aftermarket exhaust) use 3" pipes. yes, the mufflers / resonators have ALOT to do with the sound.

He did one with the C5 not sure on the C6. With the C5 he just made a pipe that shorted out the muffler, the C6 has a different design that doesn't yield that solution.

yeah , I know the "A&A exhaust mod" for the C5. that's not what i was talking about though. just recently Andy had posted for sale a "stock" C6 exhaust that he had modded by cutting out the stock mufflers and rewelding in some borla's i *think*.

anyway... hope it works out for the original poster. i'd love an exhaust with better sound.. but there is simply no way in hell we're laying out a grand for two mufflers, two tips and a couple feet of stainless tubing... an exhaust that would be a few hundred bucks for any other car... but just because it's for a C6...

Yep ... I'm sort of in that boat too. I sent Andy a PM so we will see if he can help. I am looking for something pretty simple. Maybe open the muffler and put a small bypass in it or somethif to get a bit more noise out. My buddy has the welding stuff ... I am an idiot about all of that and no hoist either!

Most can be had for just under or over the 1k mark. This is still too much but a long way from 2k. Several folks have gone down to the local exhaust place and had em weld in different mufflers which should get you down to about half of the 1k or less depending on how you go about it.

I bought my Corsa sport, 4 tip, for $967. Maybe I'm missing your point, but you don't have to spend $2k.

No one has said it cost $2,000 ..... that was a mistake by a poster.

However, question is about a mod to stock system ... not the price to buy aftermarket.

I cut the "over the axle" pipes and welded on some Borla SX Pro mufflers and a pair of Stinger tips on. It looked good and sounded great. I have since sold them.

Open them up, see where the restriction is, remove that or cut holes in to allow straight through or as close as possible to straight through, then weld back up.

The Captain has the right idea. I did the same to motorcycle mufflers. Open and remove any packing. Bend, remove and flatten out baffles. Don’t do them all or it may be too loud to suite your taste. About half should be fine.

Please keep us posted on your adventure.

OK I have one open now and what I find is a chamber that the main pipe goes to with a few bypass holes then it comes out of that into the actual tail peice pipe,

Under all of this in the main cavity is allot of packing glass wool or something.

Recomendations?

1) Remove 50% of the packing?
2) Double the by-pass hole sizes?
3)
4)

It will be easy to weld back up and the width position will need to be changed a bit so you don't cut the rear baffle. The next one will have a much smaller cut .... this was just a first time guess on size.

Yea ... but lets get some experts in here. This looks to be a $50 fix for a performance exhaust system. It will be real simple to weld back and it will never show ... on top.

Plus .... these exhaust systems are readily available for free or a few bucks.

Default Pipes

Rex,
I’d take out all of the packing and make several quarter size holes. The more you holes you make the louder it will be. The Max Option would be to flush cut the in and out pipes in the inside of the can. That would be way too loud for me. You will get some resonance out of the can as well. That will be the 60’s muscle car sound.

Man you could be on to something here. C6s from all over the US coming to Jonesville for that GTO/442 sound at Rex’s Garage. You could become the next Smokie Yunick. Charge $300 per car min. Do 2 or 3 and you’d be able to do it on a lift in 15 Minutes. Remember to claim lots of R&D costs to your customers.

We’ll call it the Rex Mod – with 3 variations
Touring – just packing removal
Sports – packing gone and 4 or 5 - 1” circular holes in each pipe
Bullets – no packing & flush cut each pipe on the inside

You’re becoming a legend in my mind.

That's exactally what I would have done if I had the means to do it. Good luck. Please let us know how it works out.

Dude,.............wait,..........look I've been there and Ill tell ya,.......... there is a way you can get where you want to go, without going bank belly up! the dirty little secret is that the old "flomasters" are within your reach and they rock,......... or close enough! call your local "Flomaster" guy and you'll find that it is a local guy that will work with you I found this out when the town dealer (these guys do ALL their own bends right on your car) put my BASSANI hedders and hy-flo cats and the x-pipe I closed it with the b&B bullits! on my vet. But I was impressed with the" flo masters" set up! (WAY LESS $$$)

You have missed the point ... cheap is the operative goal and you can get stock exhaust for free!

The car goes like a raped ape already ... now I just want some noise.

Thanks John ... you're getting me all excited now!

I have to get this about right the 1st time so a few more Q's

1) If I remove all the glass pack will the can have a tinny sound? (not desirable)

2) What does the glass pack actuall do? Does it give the can a softer sound or does it actually absorb all of the noise? It was wrapped sort of between the two pipes so I guess the exhaust from the holes in the pipes had to pass through it first. Correct?

3) The stock tips seem to have a double layer of metal or something. Is this like a muffler in itself?

When I get this done it looks like it will be an easy afternoon project and $50 for welding. After I do it I will make an audio also.
