Default 05 or 06? That is the question

I ordered my 05 C6 in March. I was told today that I am number 10 on the list before the order is placed, so I would not see it until mid August at best. The decision I have to make is, should I wait a little longer and get an 06 or take what I ordered. I would like to think that some of the quality problems might be solved in the 06. Any comments?

If you are going to wait till August to get a vette, definitely get the '06. If you are thinking about getting one now (from a different dealer obviously) versus the '06, I'd say get the '05.

As far as quality issues, car manufacturers will fix quality issues on-the-go. If there is a manufacturing defect or other problem and they have a fix, they aren't going to sit around and wait for the next year model to implement the fix. They'll do it asap.

Keep in mind with the '06 you get the new steering wheel, XM in the mirror, and a new interior color. If you like autos you might even get the paddleshifters. These are all "upgrades" though.

From what I have seen, upgrades usually come with new year models, while actual quality issues are fixed asap.

Default thanks

Thanks for the advice Joe. Do you know anything about the new steering wheel? I like the fact that XM will be in the mirror. I really didn't like the look of that big black box on the windshield. Tell me about the paddle shifters please. Not up it.

Thanks,

Mark

August 05 or September 06 I would go 06 but that's me unless they are going to give you a serious discount on the 05.

Default Buy or Wait...I am buying

I had similar fix with shyster dealer (Fischer Chevy, Titusville FL). Also ordered in March originally, or so I thought.

I am now buying through Rick Daniel at Les Stanford Chevy, my '05 is in production and will be delivered in 3-4 weeks. By the time August or September roll around, I will have enjoyed several thousand nice Florida summer miles. Of course, I have those nice miles year-round, but I want my Vette ASAP anyway. Two things for you to consider:
1. What is the backlog of preorders vs. allocations for the '06 Vette and is it really reasonable to expect a delivery even in September?
2. What's your climate, and if in snow belt, how much driving time are you giving up by waiting until Fall?

BTW, I am getting the XM radio anyway, and not going to worry about the antenna--my reception might be better this way. I'm not sure about the importance of the new steering wheel, but I do expect that there will always be "one more neat new thing" for every "next year version" that comes out. If I wait until '07, I get more HP; if I wait until '10 or '12 I might get a C7; if ears were wings, elephants would fly....

Good luck on whatever decision you make!

The big black box on the windshield is OnStar, not XM. It'll still be there for 06 unless you can avoid getting OnStar.

The XM module is concealed behind the driver's side rear speaker, but the XM antenna is that ugly wart on the roof. That's what's getting moved to the driver's side outside mirror housing for 06.

The new steering wheel is 3 spoke, and smaller in diameter than the current doughboy steering wheel. That should eliminate the problem of the wheel's rim obscuring the push buttons on the instrument cluster, and also provide a little quicker steering (smaller diameter wheel means less hand movement for a given amount of steering input).

While I think all of these changes are worthwhile, none of them could be considered major reasons not to get the 05 now. If you can get one equipped like you want off a dealer's lot, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, if you have to order, then ordering an 06 won't delay things much, and will get you a car that's a model year newer, which will be good at trade-in time.

All depends on your PATIENCE LEVEL. My first choice was a White/Silver Coupe 1SB MN6 Z51. Lots of luck. Plenty of dealers with A4's, no 6 speeds to be found (and I would have driven pretty much ANYWHERE in the country for pickup). When asking about a factory order, the Z51 is on constraint (15-20 weeks for delivery - that's an 06 ALREADY).

Since I wasn't interested in waiting 15-20 weeks, I looked for choice #2 (black/black), and found one in Miami. The A6 doesn't interest me, and any "issues" they don't have TSB's for already, are going to exist in the '06 also. I don't think anything (aside from the A6) is going to change in the '06 that much, that I'm going to be convinced to WAIT for.

You want your vette NOW, or LATER? A key personality trait of the vette owner is they like things FAST (patience NOT being a virtue).

Regards,

Rick

Unless your dealer is offering you a substantial discount, I wouldn't consider taking delivery of an '05 in August. Do a check of dealer inventories from the Chevrolet web site. I would bet you can find what you are looking for if you are willing to travel or pay shipping. A good discount ($2K or more) will more than cover travel or transport costs.
Good luck with your decission!

Default Thanks for the advice

Just got off the phone with the dealer and he said #9 as of today and if the red cordova stays on constraint a little longer, I may get bumped up a notch or two (sorry red cordova orderers). He is saying build date around 6/16, complete 7/16 and delivery 8/16 or so. He did say he was padding it a bit. If I went with the 06, I would not see it until Christmas if lucky and the price would be higher. I live in SoCal so weather is not a worry.

I'm taking my 05 in August If I'm lucky. I still got my 04/C5 for the time being.

Thanks to all of you fellow vette-heads.

So the steering wheel will be an upgrade? Any idea if it will come with any of the option packages??

The steering wheel is a 3 spoke one similar (if not identical) to the Z06 wheel. It has been pictured here before but I can't find the thread.

If it were me, I'd probably wait for the 06 at this point unless I was taking immediate delivery off the lot, not for quality or changes but for the mere fact that if you buy an 05 now, it'll be "a year old" in about 3 months.

Your dealer is feeding you . It doesn't take a month to build the car. It's about 19 hours or so. Another month to deliver is ridiculous too. I ordered my car 1/3 it was built 2/21-22 and delivered 2/25. And this was at a time of many constraints. If I was you and you're going to get an 05 I'd go to a forum dealer and get the car now for the summer and not wait for the dissapointment when you dealer keeps stringing you along.

I guess my post came across as being sarcastic. I am aware of what the three spoke wheel is and I wouldn't by a C6 without it, I just wanted to confirm whether or not it will be an option on the non-ZO6 cars (responding to the 'upgrade' term) If it were me I would like to see the three spoke on all C6's

The new steering wheel will be standard on the '06 C6 and Z06. If you opt for the A6, it will come with thumb/paddle shifters.

Yell01,

I feel like my hands are tied. I was # 27 on the list when I ordered the car end of March. Now I'm # 9. There isn't a start to build unitil I reach # 1 from what I'm told. I got lucky with my 04 last year, because it had everything I wanted and had just come in the day I was buying. Had 9 miles on it. Now with the C6 having the color and options I want, I cannot find it locally. If there is a forum dealer you can hook me up with, I would appreciate it.

Hi Birch76,
I live in so cal and I orderder my 05 to a dealer in snow belt back in Mid to late March. Right off the bat the dealer told me 12 to 15 weeks or early summer. I think it has a lot to do with allocation to the particular dealer and of course Z51 and at the time Nav and I have both. Also I didn't want to pay shipping but just have the car dilevered locally so I didn't go for dealer lot and couldn't find exactly what I wanted anyway. Not in hurry and have 4 set of wheels to get around with. I do believe your dealer with 06 delivery and so forth. Perhaps some times are a bit stretched like build and delivery. Like I said, I think it has to do with allocation. I don't have a build date yet.

One question I had was how late can you get your deposit back if you wanted it?

Default Good question on the deposit

I'll have to find out what the dealer says about that. I will also get a clearer picture about the 06 when I talk with him this week. I can wait, but just don't want to. I also agree with other people that soon after I get the 05, it will be last years model. I also do not like the XM pod on top. In the 06 it will be hidden, from what I'm told. So I can get my 05 in August or so without XM or wait. This is a To those of you that have your C6, enjoy
